Harry Bosch is a likable Homicide detective cop; this story is about finding the bones of a child buried in a shallow grave in the hills of L.A. Harry and his partner have to first identify the victim then find the murderer. This was my first Connelly book and I enjoyed it. I definitely will look for more from this author.

I could not put this book down. Stayed up 'til midnight two nights in a row and had to finish it to find out "who done it". Excellent book by a great author.
I read this book in two days, couldn't put it down. An excellent read, reminds me of the TV show CSI.

On a New Year's Day, Detective Harry Bosch fields a call that a dog found a bone.....a bone that the dog's owner,a doctor, feels certain is a human bone.
Bosch investigates, and that chance discovery leads him to a shallow grave in the Hollywood hills, evidence of a murder committed more than twenty years earlier. It's a cold case, but it stirs up Bosch's memories of his own childhood as an orphan in the city.He can't let it go.Digging through police reports and hospital records, tracking down street kids and runaways from the 1970's,Bosch finds a family ripped apart by an absence.....and a trail, ever more tenuous, into a violent, terrifying world.
As the case takes Bosch deeper into the past,a rookie cop named Julia Brasher brings him alive in the present in a way no one has in years. Bosch has been warned about the trouble that comes with dating a rookie, but no warning could withstand the heat between them....or prepare Bosch for the explosions when the case takes a hard turn. A suspect bolts, acop is shot, and suddenly Bosch's cold case has all of L.A. in an uproar....and Bosch's fighting to keep control in a lawless and brutal showdown.
Drawing on the "precision-tooled twists" and "wellspring of authentically lurid detail"( Los Angeles) that have made him one of the fastest-selling novelists at work today,Michael Connelly has written a riveting,hard-edged,and unforgettable thriller.

My favorite of the Harry Bosch series so far, and I've loved all of them. Couldn't put it down, and hated for it to end. Harry is such a complicated man, who has demons of his own to deal with while trying to make a difference. Love him

Yet another great book from one of the masters of mystery/crime fiction. This, the 8th entry in the venerable Harry Bosch series is a classic as always. A lost boy found in a hidden grave leads to a decades-old mystery. For the LAPD detective, this cold case stirs up memories of his own childhood as an orphan. The story is explosive and takes some hard turns that create an uproar that effects all of LA.

This may well be my favorite in the Harry Bosch series, to date. Very well deserved 2003 Barry and Anthony Award wins. I've already picked up the next in the series to read. Can't recommend highly enough!

Haunting Connelly. Recommended.
Another great Harry Bosch story!
Harry Bosh mystery. A dog finds a human bone in the Hollywood Hills unearthing a murder 20 years old. A cold case and the possibility of a new warm relationship for Harry.
Best Connelly book I've read
"A lost boy found in a hidden grave. A decades old mystery. To unearth the truth, Harry Borch must revisit ancient sins"
Another great addition to the Borch series, keeps you guessing until the very end.

Very good book, highly recommend it!
Trying to solve a twenty year old murder is hard work. It's a cold case but for Detective Harry Bosch, it stirs up memories of his childhood as a orphan. He can't let it go. Michael Connelly is a very entertaining author.
The Hollywood Hills, New Years Day, a twenty year old crime. A sceptical detective and a beautiful rookie cop. Very entertaining mix. Not the usual read. Some nice unexpected turns to keep you interested.
Another fine book by Connelley. Keeps you turning the pages with the usual starange ending. Cops get killed and finally Bosh gets an ending also. But it can't be terminal since there are more books in the series.
A typical Connelly! Haunting, mysterious...I didn't get a lot of sleep while reading this one!
Good Read
A very well written book with a surprise ending. Connelly at his best!
This book was thrilling, intriguing and kept you guessing. Great Book!!!
Maybe I just burned myself out on these books, but I was halfway through, still really not interested and didn't care what happened, so decided to repost. Just very slow and boring.
A Harry Bosch mystery. Intense and a good crime mystery.
It's been a while but i remember this book as being a fast read and wonderfully written
Really good book, part of the Detective Harry Bosch Series
On New Year's Day a dog finds a bone in the Hollywood Hills and unearths a murder committed over 20 years ago. It's a cold case but Det. Bosch can't let it go.Bosch is taken deeper into the past but a beautiful rookie cop brings him alive in the present.
Another fabulous book in this Harry Bosch series! Full of drama, excitement, twists & turns....excellent!
Harry Bosch, my hero
Definitely a good mystery read, but this book is more about the chain reaction a 25 year old murder discovery creates among the people who intersect with the investigation. Very down to earth and (in most respects) believable.
FYI: Contains a story line about child abuse
3.5 stars out of 5

Again, a quick read, fast pace, good story and a great question comes up as well.
Another fabulous Harry Bosch book - Michael Connelly is one of my "must read" authors, I would recommend any of his books.
ONE OF CONNELLY'S BEST BOSCH BOOKS.A RIVETING, HARD EDGE THRILLER.
enjoyed this book
Harry's past haunts him again as he searches for a child's killer.
If you like mysteries you'll love this one.
excellent read right to the end.
An abused child's body is found in a shallow grave. Bosch and company have their hands until they find the killer.
pretty good
one of his best
On New Year's Day, Detective Harry Bosch receives a phone call that a dog has found a bone - a bone that the dog's owner, a doctor, is convinced is human. During the subsequent investigation, that discovery leads Harry to a shallow grave in the Hollywood Hills, evidence of a murder committed more than twenty years earlier. It's a cold case, but it stirs up the detective's deeply buried memories of his own childhood as an orphan in the city. Especially when the bones are identified to be those of a child - a twelve-year-old boy.
Harry can not let this case go. He's absolutely determined that the child will not be forgotten. Unearthing hidden stories, Harry eventually discovers the child's true identity and begins to slowly reconstruct the boy's fractured life.
At the same time, a burgeoning love affair with a female rookie cop begins to blossom for Harry - until a devastatingly botched mission leaves him in more trouble than ever before in his turbulent career. As the investigation races toward its unexpected conclusion, Harry is left on the brink of an unimaginable decision...
I thought that reading this book was quite intriguing. In my opinion, the writing was very clear and easy to follow. This actually was the first book by Michael Connelly that I've ever read, and the eighth book in this particular series.
Despite that, the mystery wasn't too difficult for me to understand. Although I will say that, at least for me, the ending was slightly anticlimactic - leaving me with a couple of unanswered questions. Overall though, City of Bones by Michael Connelly earned a definite A! and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Any Harry Bosch Book is worth reading. Love them all and have hooked my Hubby after his first Harry Bosch Book.
one of Connelly's best
As a Michael Connelly fanatic, I can honestly say he is again at the top of his game. Loved the book.
Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I've read a few of M. Connelly's book and this one was one of his least well plotted. It ended with a fizz - dissapointing, especially since it was obvious that the direction of the police investigation should have taken place in the beginning in the book. Otherwise, the knowledge of police work shows through and Detection Bosch is a credible, sympathetic hero.
I love this author. He always makes me read into the night. This one is sensational.

A cold case and a new love for Harry Bosch.
Great book! This was the first time I have read this author and I really like his works. He is right up there with James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell type books.
Loved it
Good book. Not as good as the Closers.
A page turner
Another GREAT Bosch book - with a surprise ending!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haven't read yet but got 2 copies I really enjoy Connelly's work and have not been disappointed yet.

Good character development and very interesting story.
I liked this book! It was my first Micheal Connelly book!
Great detective novel with characters from other books by this author
Excellent story! A real good detective story without alot of romance or violence!
A dog finds a bone, brings it home, and so starts another Harry Bosch mystery. A great read.
A very nice book that seems to follow actual homocide procedures in the Los Angeles area. I enjoyed this selection and recommend it to others.
The police are called when a dog brings home a human bone after wandering the Hollywood Hills. When the area is searched, a shallow grave containing more bones is found. Detective Harry Bosch investigates the nearly thirty year old murder of a teenage boy. He must discover the identity of the child, along with who killed him. There are only a few clues to the case, but Harry and his partner, Edgar, want to close the case on this one.
This is a solid mystery in the Harry Bosch series. There are a couple of different suspects. I wasn't sure who killed the boy, and was surprised when Harry uncovered the culprit. My rating: 4 Stars.

My favorite so far in the Bosch series by Michael Connelly!
Kathy N. (addicated-to-reading) reviewed City of Bones (Harry Bosch, Bk 8) on + 152 more book reviews
Just recently started this series and I'm hooked. As always the pace was brisk and well planned, the characters felt like old friends, and the ending makes me want to get into the next book as quickly as I can. Recommend this book and the whole series.
Loved how Harry Bosch goes the extra mile to solve the murder of a missing boy whose bones were uncovered by a dog after being buried for 20-some years.
Once again, Connelly weaves a police procedural with twists along the way. A bit hurried at the end but still believable.
As always another great book about H. Bosch.
This was another great Harry Bosch book. They just seem to get better.
I loved this book a lot. Have been reading the Harry Bosch series in order (this is #8) and this was in the top 3 of the series so far. Unexpected plot twists keep you guessing. A real page-turner.
another harry bosche, lapd detective, story. this one has a big surprise ending and lots of twists in the plot as usual. a real page turner for the beach or plane this summer.
