Harry Bosch is a likable Homicide detective cop; this story is about finding the bones of a child buried in a shallow grave in the hills of L.A. Harry and his partner have to first identify the victim then find the murderer. This was my first Connelly book and I enjoyed it. I definitely will look for more from this author.

On a New Year's Day, Detective Harry Bosch fields a call that a dog found a bone.....a bone that the dog's owner,a doctor, feels certain is a human bone.

Bosch investigates, and that chance discovery leads him to a shallow grave in the Hollywood hills, evidence of a murder committed more than twenty years earlier. It's a cold case, but it stirs up Bosch's memories of his own childhood as an orphan in the city.He can't let it go.Digging through police reports and hospital records, tracking down street kids and runaways from the 1970's,Bosch finds a family ripped apart by an absence.....and a trail, ever more tenuous, into a violent, terrifying world.
As the case takes Bosch deeper into the past,a rookie cop named Julia Brasher brings him alive in the present in a way no one has in years. Bosch has been warned about the trouble that comes with dating a rookie, but no warning could withstand the heat between them....or prepare Bosch for the explosions when the case takes a hard turn. A suspect bolts, acop is shot, and suddenly Bosch's cold case has all of L.A. in an uproar....and Bosch's fighting to keep control in a lawless and brutal showdown.
Drawing on the "precision-tooled twists" and "wellspring of authentically lurid detail"( Los Angeles) that have made him one of the fastest-selling novelists at work today,Michael Connelly has written a riveting,hard-edged,and unforgettable thriller.

My favorite of the Harry Bosch series so far, and I've loved all of them. Couldn't put it down, and hated for it to end. Harry is such a complicated man, who has demons of his own to deal with while trying to make a difference. Love him

Yet another great book from one of the masters of mystery/crime fiction. This, the 8th entry in the venerable Harry Bosch series is a classic as always. A lost boy found in a hidden grave leads to a decades-old mystery. For the LAPD detective, this cold case stirs up memories of his own childhood as an orphan. The story is explosive and takes some hard turns that create an uproar that effects all of LA.

Another fine book by Connelley. Keeps you turning the pages with the usual starange ending. Cops get killed and finally Bosh gets an ending also. But it can't be terminal since there are more books in the series.

Definitely a good mystery read, but this book is more about the chain reaction a 25 year old murder discovery creates among the people who intersect with the investigation. Very down to earth and (in most respects) believable.

FYI: Contains a story line about child abuse

On New Year's Day, Detective Harry Bosch receives a phone call that a dog has found a bone - a bone that the dog's owner, a doctor, is convinced is human. During the subsequent investigation, that discovery leads Harry to a shallow grave in the Hollywood Hills, evidence of a murder committed more than twenty years earlier. It's a cold case, but it stirs up the detective's deeply buried memories of his own childhood as an orphan in the city. Especially when the bones are identified to be those of a child - a twelve-year-old boy.

Harry can not let this case go. He's absolutely determined that the child will not be forgotten. Unearthing hidden stories, Harry eventually discovers the child's true identity and begins to slowly reconstruct the boy's fractured life.

At the same time, a burgeoning love affair with a female rookie cop begins to blossom for Harry - until a devastatingly botched mission leaves him in more trouble than ever before in his turbulent career. As the investigation races toward its unexpected conclusion, Harry is left on the brink of an unimaginable decision...

I thought that reading this book was quite intriguing. In my opinion, the writing was very clear and easy to follow. This actually was the first book by Michael Connelly that I've ever read, and the eighth book in this particular series.

Despite that, the mystery wasn't too difficult for me to understand. Although I will say that, at least for me, the ending was slightly anticlimactic - leaving me with a couple of unanswered questions. Overall though, City of Bones by Michael Connelly earned a definite A! and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

I've read a few of M. Connelly's book and this one was one of his least well plotted. It ended with a fizz - dissapointing, especially since it was obvious that the direction of the police investigation should have taken place in the beginning in the book. Otherwise, the knowledge of police work shows through and Detection Bosch is a credible, sympathetic hero.

The police are called when a dog brings home a human bone after wandering the Hollywood Hills. When the area is searched, a shallow grave containing more bones is found. Detective Harry Bosch investigates the nearly thirty year old murder of a teenage boy. He must discover the identity of the child, along with who killed him. There are only a few clues to the case, but Harry and his partner, Edgar, want to close the case on this one.

This is a solid mystery in the Harry Bosch series. There are a couple of different suspects. I wasn't sure who killed the boy, and was surprised when Harry uncovered the culprit. My rating: 4 Stars.
