The City of the Dead takes off immediately after The Rising leaves you wanting more. New breed of zombies that think, talk, shoot guns and drive. Very good book, hope there's another sequel.

This book was a a trip! It must be part of a series as it seems to pick up in the middle of action and it stays high-action all the way until the end. I won't give away the ending, but let's just say, this isn't your usual book! Anyway, if you like zombie stuff, this is worth the read. I read it in about 3 hours or less, so it isn't heavy-duty, but it is entertaining.

Like its precursor, The Rising, this book fills a certain void for those seeking zombies in fiction. It also doesn't have nearly as many typos and errors as The Rising (though they are not completely gone). Instead of typos, this one is riddled with continuity errors of which Hollywood might be jealous. Also like The Rising, though Keene claims the zombies are "slower" than a living human, they manage to leap and run and rip people apart with their bare hands--unless it will be necessary for a character to escape at the last moment, in which case the zombies approach slowly :S One nitpick about Keene's writing is that it is often difficult to really get a sense of the amount of -time- that passes; for example, though "the end of the street filled with zombies" the characters stop to talk and introduce themselves. One can't help thinking, "If they'd just said a quick 'Hi' and gone back to their car, they would have been golden!" Still, it continues the story of some of the survivors from the first book, so this book is recommended for those who finished the first book and managed to still be curious.

The sequel to "The Rising" picks up right where the first book left off. It continues the streamlined and action-packed writing style of Keene and also further fleshes out all of the major players in the plot. It does have some similarities to George Romero's disappointing "Land of the Dead", but this book is by far better than that excuse for cinema. Also, watch for the ending - it's happy, but not. It's hard to explain.

What can I say other than I will probably re-read this book as many times as I see a favorite film. You'll get a skin prickling sense of what's it like to be there w/ the characters. I have never wanted to appreciate a book (more than the Bible) as much as I do BRIAN KEENE. I have always quickly read through books to get to the next. I have had favorites in the past but nothing that I can recall reading in one sitting every, single, time. If you don't have 12-24-48 hours to spare then don't start a KEENE novel. He's a addictive and I'd recommend buying 2-3 at a time b/c once you finish 1 you'll be hungry for more.

It wasn't possible, but I wanted more when I was done reading this book. It was a page turner. I couldn't put it down when I got to the last few chapters. The last book that I sat down and read in a day was the last of the Harry Potter books. I needed to know what was going to happen, I couldn't do anything else until I was finished because it was so good. If you're going to read this series make sure you have both of them at the same time, because if you don't, you may just go crazy trying to figure out what happens after the Rising. This book is on the top of my favorite books list. You cared about what happens to the people. A great read.

The book begins where The Rising left the reader. Luckily, for those who didn't read the book shortly after finishing the first one, the last chapter is repeated. Jim Thurmond, Frankie and pastor Martin travelled through five states facing death with each step to finally reach Jim's ex-wife's house to look for Jim's son Danny.
Danny is alive and reunited with his father but the zombies aren't far away. The house soon is ambushed from the outside and it is only a matter of time until they face the inevitable once again.
They find themselves in a small room without escape while the zombies try to burn the house. le, attracted by gunshots, Don De Santos, leaves his panic room for the first time in what seems to be forever. He sneaks up to his attic to discover faces and little Danny in the neighbor's house. With time running out he manages to lift his ladder from one window to the other and all are save - for now.
Wounded and scared they all flee in his SUV but are soon in trouble again. Chased on top of a parking garage they are rescued by a helicopter which takes them to the seemingly only safe place left: The Ramsey Towers in New York City.
Wounds healing and adjusting to a new life, they think they might have made it until the undead form an army, preparing to ambush the tower and killing the last remaining living humans on earth. The hopeless battle for their lives and all that humanity stands for begins and leaves a group of ten people underground trying to go, well, nowhere.

Keene's impressing way of describing the war inside the tower almost blew me away. He has this thing to involve different characters which shortly after face their death while the reader just thought a new, lasting character, entered the story. He does that in a very natural way that it always feels saddening to read that this person dies.
What happened in this tower was rage, wrapped in simple words that made it feel like it's real. Placing gruesome pictures of people overrun and dying where ever you look in ones head.
The eerie feeling in the underground tunnels left goosebumps on my arms. Imagine standing in the tunnel, smelling the sewer and it is pitch black around you. You don't know where you are going, what's around the next corner or who is standing directly in front of you staring in your eyes.
Keene gave his story something real and alive so that the ending isn't shocking at all.
"Everything dies, but not everything has an ending."
The zombie-fan is delighted !

This book had non-stop action, but for a zombie purist like myself, I couldn't get into Keene's idea of zombies. I don't think they should be coordinated, cunning, and using weapons. Keene made them unstoppable and vindictive enough to saw through vocal chords to kill someone. Poor humans. I usually side with the zombies, but I had to side with the humans this time - how were they to fight this group that had no weaknesses? Zombies driving cars? Please. A big disappointment for me, but an action-filled book, nonetheless.
this story continues where it left off in the rising. you will learn more about the zombies in this book, why they eat, where they came from, etc. you will also learn more about ob the obot, leader of zombies, the siqqusim, abominations that speak from the head, djinn, monsters.
I don't normally go for zombie books, but this is REALLY good! This is even better than book 1 "The Rising". I enjoyed this from start to finish and loved all of the action and surprises at every turn!
Zombie fans will love the sequel to Brian Keene's "The Rising". Keene is definitely one of the new stars of horror fiction. This book begins after the rescue of the main character's son. The few survivors are then on the run again trying to stay ahead of the zombie mob. We also learn what has caused the zombie plague.
Interesting zombie read with a twist. These zombies think. Where do you run when there is no hope?
...so I rush out to buy the second book, since the first one abruptly ended in mid climax, and it was great aside from the fact that I was very dissapointed with the ending...which almost taints the whole experience and forced me to give the book an overall lower rating.

WOW! This is the sequel to Brian Keene's The Rising, which is the first book ive read by him and WOW. What a way to end it all. i am most impressed by this author, really scary and page turning i could not put it down!
The follow-up to The Rising. Find out what happens to Jim, Danny, Frankie,Martin and the others. A quick read, just as The Rising was. The zombies have more of a character role in this one. Another good one from Keene.
Excellent book. I loved it and read it in one day.
