I chose a book by Lynda LaPlante because I noticed that her name is all over many of the British mysteries I like to watch on television. Her plots are complex and character-driven, which I like.

In this case DCI James Langton is injured severely in an attack by a suspect he'd been pursuing. He almost loses his life, but is determined to get back to the team.

After much time in therapy he is finally released but to those who know him he is far from well. While he was off work, DI Anna Travis has been picking up the slack. She is also his lover, and invites him to stay at her place while recovering.

There is tension between the two not just in the bedroom but also at work, where Anna suspects Langton is looking for his own attacker rather than staying focused on the job. Clearly the pain he suffers affects his behavior at times, but it also simply accentuates what Anna has noticed in the past.

I cheered Anna's decision about this relationship and I might even get additional books in the series.
