THIS BOOK IS WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE " BEST " BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ!!!!! I read a lot of books so I give a lot of kudos to Beverly Barton for writing a book that I carried all over the house with me as I just found it so hard to put it down!!!! I read it in just a few hours!!!!! If you love a good thriller with a whole lot of excitement, that puts the reader to the test of guessing who the murderer is then this is the book for you! Order this book......you won't be disappointed! By the way.....this is the first of Beverly Barton's books I have read and I am now hooked on her!

This was my first book by this author and I've already started looking for more. The character development was great, the mystery had me guessing til the end and there was just enough romantic suspense to keep it interesting!

Adams County, Alabama, is a small, friendly place where everyone knows each other - but not well enough, it seems, because Sheriff Bernie Granger has a serial killer on her hands, a total psycho who first romances, then stalks, kidnaps, and kills his victims. It's Bernie's first big case, a chance for her to prove herself to her new partner, Memphis police detective Jim Norton, but it won't be easy. This killer is uncannily smart. It's as if he knows what Bernie is thinking. And his next move is more than shocking - it's chillingly personal.

This book starts out with the brutal rape of Stephanie Preston. Unfortunately for Stephanie this is not the first time she's been raped since she was taken. The killer keeps them for weeks and gets progressively more brutal until he kills them. If you can't read about rape, then do yourself a favor and skip this book. It is about a serial rapist/killer and is very graphic.

Having said that, I must also say it's a really good story with really great characters. I particularly liked Bernie and Jim. I do think that the book could have been shorter as it felt drawn out at times. The killer repeated his MO to the letter each and every time and I got sick to death (no pun intended) of reading again and again and again the same thing. I figured out the killer early in the story and thought for a couple of really bright cops that it took them too long to figure out the mystery.

very well written mystery--characters come alive and story unfolds at a good pace and keeps you on the edge. I've read this one twice and still very good.
