Very imaginative story of people who communicate with alien horses through telepathy. Cherryh does a great job of conceptualizing non-verbal communication with horses.

It is a story of a small group of humans who colonize a distant planet that has a fearsome assortment of native fauna which can use telepathic images to communicate and deceive. The humans are aided by native horse-like animals (nighthorses) that are attracted to humans. The story contains plenty of drama and suspense, as young humans and nighthorses learn to cope with the flood of telepathic images.
