Come and sit a spell inside the Bean Hive Coffeehouse! Listen in on the latest gossip, enjoy a tasty treat and have some of the best coffee to be found in Honey Springs, Kentucky.
Bride-to-be Pam Horton stops in at the Bean Hive Coffeehouse to see owner Roxanne Bloom about setting up a coffee bar at her upcoming wedding. Their discussion is cut short by Pam's best friend and maid of honor, Hillary Canter. Hillary (who has been nastily going around town pushing Pam around in order to change all of Pam's wedding plans to suit her own tastes) rudely interrupts their discussion, and Pam decides that she has had enough. A loud disagreement ensues, and a friendship ends. Pam decides to go ahead with her plans, so Roxy stops in at Queen for the Day to purchase a dress for the wedding. While there, she witnesses an argument between her friend Babette Cliff and Hillary over a white coat, which Babette ends up buying.
The following morning around 3:30 a.m., Roxy sees a figure in a white coat sitting on a bench outside of her coffee shop. When she approaches, she realizes that it is Hillary Canter, and that she's dead!
There are quite a few suspects, including Emily Rich (owner the Bee's Knees Bakery), who was upset with Hillary over a damaged reputation and a cancelled wedding cake, and Babette, who owned the coat found on the victim. Babette hires Roxy (since Roxy is a former attorney) to represent her, so Roxy embarks upon a bit of investigating to uncover the real killer.
There was also a secondary mystery woven into the story about mortgage company scam that was being investigated by Roxy's Aunt Maxi. Maxi was quite a fun character that really made me laugh out loud.
The characters were interesting, and the town was described in rich detail. It was very easy to envision the entire boardwalk and its community of quirky characters. Roxy is a smart character, and I loved the descriptions of the recipes in her cafe, and her relationship with her former childhood sweetheart Patrick. I would have liked more of Roxy and Patrick. Perhaps the next book will see Roxy planning her own wedding? Her cute little dog Pepper also adds interest to the story, although I think that Roxy's "conversations" with Pepper got to be a bit too repetitive at times. The murderer wasn't a total surprise to me, but I enjoyed watching how the secondary investigation cleverly wrapped itself into the first.
Overall, Cold Blooded Brew was a fun and entertaining read, and I will definitely be watching for the next one in this series.
I received an ARC of this book and I voluntarily chose to write an honest review.
