Very different book. Only 3 stars, but definitely worth the read writen as if the storyteller is a 12/13 year old girl in a small town.

I have never been a huge fan of Martha Grimes, but this book completely changed my mind. It is a moving novel, which has a mystery at its heart but is really about the choices we make and their consequences. Grimes has an incredible ability to bring her child narrator Emma to vivid, contradictory, loveable life, while at the same time showing the viewer glimpses of adult conflict that Emma is only just beginning to understand. A wonderful read.
Second in the series following a young girl solving an old and new murder. The only thing I didn't like was the time that was devoted to catching up people who hadn't read the first book.
Excellent conditon; book is suspenseful. Read once. It was alright for a mystery but not what i was looking for.
Emma Graham is one smart 12-yr-old but she doesn't flaunt it. She gets herself plunk right in the middle of a criminal investigation in which she is the only person who is thinking about what really happened. Before the crime is solved two old murders have joined the melee and Emma becomes the heroine of the moment. This is one of Martha Grimes best novels IMHO, you'll read it again and again.
I can tell you, I really enjoyed the Emma Graham 'books. My favorite Martha Grimes. I wish there were more!!!
I find her books hard to get into. My girlfriend loves her writing. Different strokes right?
The follow-up to "Hotel Paradise", this book continues the story of Emma, the 12-year-old girl looking to find out who killed Fern Queen. Still left to herself by her distant mother, she renews her friendship with Sheriff DeGhyn while still conducting her own "investigations". If you liked "Hotel Paradise", this is a must-read.
I really enjoyed this book.
This was slow getting started, but once it did, it drew me in and kept me wanting to find out what happens next. She's a different sort of writer than I'm used to, but the change was appreciated. I like the way she shares the inner thoughts of the character telling the story. She portrays the 12-year old girl well.

Humorous murder mystery narrated by a very spunky 12 year old girl. I found her quite amusing.
If you're going to write a mystery with a 12-year-old narrator, you'd either better have a damn good reason or be a damn good writer. This one misses on both points, and after 50 pages, I decided it wasn't going to get any better.
