This is easily the most frightening book I've ever read. Angry ghosts take their revenge on evil murderers. Scary, scary, scary!
From the back cover:"Terror grows in Babylon, a typical sleepy Southern town with its throbbing sun and fog-shrouded swamps.
Margaret Lark has been robbed of her innocence- and her life. Her killer is rich and powerful beyond the grasp of earthly law.
Now, in the murky depths of the local river, a shifting, almost human shape slowly takes form. Night after night it will pursue the murderer. It will watch him from the trees. And in the chill waters of the river,it will claim him in the ultimate embrace.
The cold moon rises, the awful squishing sounds begin..."

This is a real page turner! I read this book in two days because the story is so good I couldnt put it down! Absolutely terrific characters in a small town who have evil among them. The scares are horrific and will keep you looking everytime you drive down an old country road, especially at night. Spooky. Best Michaal Mcdonald yet.
I just finished this book for the second time. Must admit it was as good this time around as it was almost 30 years back! Michael McDowell was a wonderful writer and I don't think there is a book that he had wriiten that I haven't read/liked. The suspense and shear terror in Cold Moon Over Babylon is enough to keep you on the edge of your seat...
The death of a young girl in a southern town unleashes supernatural forces bent on revenge. McDowell's career was woefully short (he died young) and this is one of his best spooky tales (I feel his best is The Elementals.) He evokes a brooding, unescapable terror and unlike in many similarly themed stories, the reader might feel that the victims of the haunting are getting just what they deserve.
