This book almost made it to the DNF pile. It didn't start off well for me. Luckily, it didn't take long for it to kick in and take off. This book is about a fungus that was found in a town in Australia. It attacked/inhabited people and caused them to explode to help spread the fungus. Bioterror operatives go in and destroy the fungus and the town with it. Not before taking a sample out to study.
Flash to many years down the road... fungus is forgotten and the people who dealt with it are old. But the fungus hasn't stopped. This is a smart and adapting fungus that only knows one thing... it must grow and spread.
The thought of the whole fungal issue felt too real and way too scary. After reading about true accounts of fungi that infect insects and take over their bodies, it doesn't seem to far fetched. Throw in a creepy tale like that and some irritating but fun-loving characters, you got a pretty great story going on.
