The latest Pendergast episode is just as much fun and just as scary as the others with a "leave you hanging" ending. I just love this series by Preston and Child and hope it continues far into the future.

A conspiracy murder vomit flop. I tried so hard with this, but after 20 pages and then skipping ahead further I was so bored to tears with this. This Pendergast story went astray, and saddly I don't think I will be back.

This is the first time that I have walked away from this series unhappy and unsatisfied, it just didn't gel this time, there was to much going on, at the same time, we are not privy to most of the secrets he uncovered about Helen and then he finds out that Helen is most likely alive and that becomes the cliffhanger which would have been fine if the rest of the book was okay. I love this series and of course now it's been over a year and the authors are working on this new series and their fans are waiting anxiously to find out about Helen. The authors need to be careful because if they dangle that carrot for to long a time, they might find their audience no longer cares. Anyway don't waste your money or your credits for this one.

Excellent read .... great settings well described ... Usually I don't like books that "jump around" in the beginning, but this one was done well and easy to follow or maybe so interestingly written that it was easy to folow ... Jumps in both 'places' and 'times' are well written ... I enjoyed this book and read it more quickly than average for me.

I was disappointed with this book. I don't like to read "to be continued" books and this one became the second of a triology. Did I miss something? Now I will have to wait for the final installment. Also Pendergast seemed more "human" in this book. After achieving almost inhuman status (the thing I liked most about the Pendergast series) he is now a guy that is just lucky. My dislike is still overshadowed by my love to read about Pendrgast, DeCosta, Haywood, and Green. I can't wait for part 3. I hope Helen survives.

Devastated by the discovery that his wife, Helen, was murdered, Special Agent Pendergast must have retribution. But revenge is not simple. As he stalks his wife's betrayers-a chase that takes him from the wild moors of Scotland to the bustling streets of New York City and the darkest bayous of Louisiana-he is also forced to dig further into Helen's past. And he is stunned to learn that Helen may have been a collaborator in her own murder.

Peeling back the layers of deception, Pendergast realizes that the conspiracy is deeper, goes back generations, and is more monstrous than he could have ever imagined-and everything he's believed, everything he's trusted, everything he's understood . . . may be a horrific lie.

couldn't get into this one at all! mainly don't like stories that take place in Scotland, etc. and the names are ridiculous

Having read all the Pendergast novels, some twice, I am always thrilled when a new one comes out. It is almost like a trip back home. "Cold Vengence" is no exception.
In this latest novel by Preston and Child I ran into a number of old friends, some I thought to never see again, and resolved several questions from earlier novels.
Aloysius is again on the trail of Helen's killer. As the conspiracy continues to thicken, he learns it was more, and less, than murder. Apparently, Helen and her brother were involved in a post war Nazi plot which continues till the present. After 350+ pages of great reading it appears Pendergast has again been out flanked.
This series reminds me of the old cliffhanger serials I uased to watch at the local theater when I was a kid. I love it!
Agent Pendergast is the detective Sherlock Holmes wishes he (she?) could be.
A work of advice: to get the most of these novels read them chronologically. Although they are all stand-alone, there is a greater impact from reading them in order.
Can't wait for the next one.

I had read another thriller by this pair of authors and expected to like this one. But it was awful. It has a weirdly stilted Victorian tone to the writing and characters that had a lot of action momentum but not human depth that you could identify with. That left me feeling that the plot was wooden, mechanical and ultimately unsatisfying. Not recommended if you are fans of topnotch thriller writers like Lee Child, David Baldacci, etc.
