The story of a white girl and a mulatto girl who survive the Civil War and try to rebuild a plantation and their lives on their own during the time of Reconstruction. Obviously, they encounter many dreadful times and many obstacles. They overcome and grow up and grow in their faith by trusting their God to pull them through.
Very entertaining with insight into everyday life during the Reconstruction period. As with all Michael Phillips books: well worth the read!

The third in the series follows the girls with new threats to their way of life. A long lost relative appears and changes their lives. A very good read.

This series started slow, but once into it, the characters are likeable and it's a good read. It's also a quick read.

I enjoy history, so this book in my opinion was excellant. It was hard to put down. You need to read the whole series. Which I did. There are three books including this one in the series.

I love this series. It is true to the history of the civil war and its aftermath.
The amazing thing is that two teenage girls can take care of each other and two other girls without any help from adults. Their faith and love for each other and the other girls that keep them going.
Can't wait to read #4.

In this 3rd book of the Shenandoah Sisters series--The Color of Your Skin Ain't the Color of Your Heart by Michael Phillips, Katie and Mayme continue to fight to save the plantation with the help of Henry and his son, Jeremiah. Mayme gets a big surprise and Katie is thrilled to see her Uncle Templeton again and find the gold that was hidden in her house. Will it be enough to pay off the loan on the plantation? Will the bad men steal it from her? How many more will find out her secret that her parents have died and what will happen to the four girls living on their own?
This book has more surprises pop up, more action and some humor too. I enjoyed this one too and look forward to finding out what happens next in the last book of this series.

A quick read, like the others in this series, which is unusual for Michael Phillips. Very enjoyable. A few surprises, but also mostly predictable.

I enjoyed this book (#3) in the continuing saga of life before the Civil War (#1) and immediately following (#2-4). While historical, addressing reconstruction, reversal of fortune and race issues after the war, it is hard to remember this is a novel. Somewhere in the south after the war, all of these challenges were occurring. The strong female characters develop through the series as a necessity for survival. I devoured this four book series by Michael Phillips. You will too if you love history, particularly the Civil War era.
