Cole McGuire has returned to White Stone, Colorado, because of a letter hes recently received. It is a message from one of the town whores, letting him know she is expecting their child. Unfortunately, the letter got to him 2 years after the fact.

Cole was the son of a town prostitute and he did not want his child to suffer the indignities meted out to the offspring of saloon girls. Hed come to take a hand in raising his child; delaying his plans to prospect for gold in California.

When he asks about Lily (his babys mother), hes told that she died in childbirth and their son died too. Cole finds the person who wrote the letter for Lily -- Rebecca Taylor. She seems very nervous and refuses to satisfy his interest in Lily and the baby. He decides to stay in town to find out what really happened.

The reader soon learns that Cole and Rebecca Taylor have a history; Cole has been smitten with Rebecca since he was a teen. Shes now a poor widow with a 2 year-old son.

Frankly, there was nothing extraordinary about this story; it seemed very ho-hum. This is Mary Burton's second published novel; it seems to be an early effort where she is honing her skills to become the wonderful author she is today.
