Early in the book we learn that author is advised to keep her doctoral thesis "objective" instead of autobiographical.
I think this book is the result of taking all her self-absorbed meandering out of her thesis.
I was disappointed in this book.

Good story about an American woman who marries a Maori man and the cultural differences that keep their marriage interesting. Very interesting way to learn some history of the area. I would have liked to have seen a comment from the husband's point of view but the book was enjoyable and seemed fairly evenly reported.
