A tortoise who tells the story? Get real! But, it's true. This book is a wonderfully entertaining diversion from the norm. One definition of quirky is "ability to put forth many amazing smiles from people" and it so describes Audrey Flowers. I love Audrey with her quirky ways - her methods to conquer her fear of flying; her love of the game, Clue, and how it applies to her life; her devotion to Winnifred, the tortoise, who shares the narration of this book; and her lively imagination that takes her on disarming and oh, so funny adventures.
A Canadian who moved to Oregon with a boyfriend who has since ridden off to climb some mountain, Audrey inherited a tortoise who came with the apartment. Whether a human and a tortoise can bond is debatable but Audrey believes it's possible to the extent that she calls her friends who are tortoise sitting in the middle of the night.
When she has a call that her father is ill she must board a plane and fly to his side. She knows that she can arrive safely if she envisions the plane taking off and landing with ease. She must - must not see the plane crash. So Audrey's adventures begin from disarming an airline detective because she thinks he's a hijacker to locating her Uncle Thoby who she knows she must rescue from her English relatives. Get ready for laughs, tears, and more from this author who wrote in my opinion a most memorable novel.
