Many people don't realize the struggle the ex-slaves had after freedom because of the loss of food and shelter. But, many also kept together and supported each other in small communities. This is a rare book and I value it for its insights into a different culture and time that I'll never, hopefully, experience. Most of the people interviewed lived in the area south of Myrtle Beach. If you have ever visited that area, you will have some idea of their location.
