Sixth in the very cozy No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series set in Botswana, Africa. Though this series is definitely not heavy on the mystery, I love it, and each visit to Precious Ramotswe's world always leaves me feeling refreshed and hopeful. In this episode, there are issues with an intruder hiding under Mma Ramotswe's bed, one of the apprentices at Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni's garage quitting and getting involved with a rich older woman, Mma Ramotswe's first husband Note, a cruel and abusive jazz musician who has been away in Johannesburg, making a return visit to Gabarone, and Mma Makutsi taking dancing lessons. Enjoyable as always and hard to put down once you start one.

I really liked this one. I think it was as good or even better than the first in the series. The story is still, characteristically, warm and engaging, but the story line seems a bit more involved and the real-life problems of the region are also given some notice- lightly, but at least the author does recognize that everything is not peaches and roses.

This is the best-written of the "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series, with the exception of the original. The other books felt like filler, but this one had lots of sub-plots and was very enjoyable to read. If you liked "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," be sure to read this sequel!

I love this whole series. Sweet, funny, charming. These are mysteries, but not dead-body mysteries, and there are typically a few under consideration at one time. The depictions of the characters and of Botswana are beautiful, as is the prose.

Not a conventional mystery - a wonderfully charactered series unraveling the mysteries of human nature.

Precious has several complicated puzzles and problems to solve simultaneously - this makes for one of the most interesting books in this series.

I think this is the best of this Botswana-set series so far. Speedy Motors now has more customers than they can handle, and the detective agency is doing brisk business. Mma Ramotswe is frightened by an intruder in her home who manages to escape without her identifying him, and the next day a pumpkin is left on her porch. Charlie, the elder of the two apprentices, finds a sugar mama and resigns in a fit of pique. While investigating Charlie, Mma Ramotswe's van hits a man on a bicycle, and they end up hiring him to replace the apprentice. Mma Makutsi takes up ballroom dancing in hopes of meeting a man, but finds herself paired with a gentleman who has two left feet and a bad stutter. Then Mma Ramotswe's ex-husband Note Mokoti comes back to town, with a threat that endangers her happiness. This volume is more lively than the ones that have come before, with new characters and further development of the regulars. It's another pleasing addition to this cozy series.

This is number six in the series and Precious is happily married. However, her first husband shows up and tries to blackmail her. Also, Charlie, one of the apprentices, gets involved with a rich married woman and quits his job. They hire a new person, who also turns out to be a good detective. And last but not least, Grace gets a proposal for marriage!

Another great story in this series. A couple of new characters introduced who appear to be staying. This series is so very interesting for many reasons. The African attitude about life, love, harmony and everyday things is grand. Smith seems to know the people and that makes it really good. Entertaining and definitely cozy. Good clean reading.

I have truly enjoyed every book in this series to date. This one was especially good because of the conflict over her marriage that Precious had. Rather than running from the conflict and confusion she faced it and came out much better for it.

When I read Alexander Mccall Smith's books, I am reminded that many people in the world are caring, kind and well mannered. And for a time after I finish one of his books, I think I am more caring, kind and well mannered.

I loved the book as Precious continues on with her delightful story finding out she was never married to Note and being very worried that she still was. Somone hiding under her bed gets squashed when she lies down on it for a rest and someone leaves her a very nice pumpkin.

Book Description
In this latest, widely praised addition to the beloved No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, the charming and ever-resourceful Precious Ramotswe finds herself faced with new challengesand intriguing surprises.

Precious is busier than usual at the detective agency when she discovers an intruder in her house on Zebra Driveand perhaps even more baffling--a pumpkin on her porch. Her associate, Mma Makutsi, also has a full plate. She's taken up dance lessons, only to be partnered with a man with two left feet. And at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, where Mr J.L.B. Matekoni is already overburdened with work, one of his apprentices has run off with a wealthy older woman. But what finally rattles Mma Ramotswes normally unshakable composure is a visitor who forces her to confront a difficult secret from her past.

I read this book when it first came out and recently received another copy as a gift. It is hard to believe these books, including the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, are written by a man. We should all be married to a guy like Alexander McCall Smith because he understands women perfectly. The books in this series leave an indelible picture of day-to-day life in Botswanna, the importance of drinking tea, and the mysteries of an often cheerful universe. This is a lovely read.

This is my favorite of the series so far. Every book has been a pleasure to read but this one made me chuckle more than once over the antics of the two lady detectives. These books are light and easy to read but still very interesting.
