A portrait of a family living on two sides of the globe. Chan Sam, a Chinese peasant moves to the New World leaving his "at-home" wife to raise their son and the concubine's two Canadian-born children. May-ying is the concubine who supports Chan Sam, his family in China, and their third daughter, Hing, the author's mother.

Good social information, but not as interesting as it might have been.

Excellently written. The story of a Chinese family split between Canada and China. Very moving. Written in the style of a novel. Very smooth.
