I thoroughly enjoyed "Consequences". At first I thought of it as a multi-generational saga of women. But it's much more than that. It's a thoughtful and inspiring story about people, both men and women, whose lives are changed and influenced by the people and circumstances around them. It does focus on the historic setting of each of the three women beginning in 1935 and ending some 70 years later. The characters are all likeable and the story engaging. Relationships don't always work out but there is a central optimism to the novel that captivates you.
Ended up loving this book! I'lI admit, it became a bit tedious and I considered giving up but I persevered and am so glad. Lively can get a little bogged down in detail so you have to be patient. This delightful story of three women, their history, their decisions, their spunk, was enlightening. They are mothers and daughters first, and partners second. Loved the description of social history along with chronologic history, the circumstances that formed their choices and decisions. I confess I was tempted to make a character chart toward the end! Overall, very enjoyable.
As always, a nice read. Penelope Lively consistently keeps me engaged.
