Comments: One of my favorites. I love it! Horry, with her stammer and faults, is still a girl with many good qualities. She loves her family, speaks her mind, and owns up to her mistakes. She's brave and resourceful, too. Marcus, whom I'm madly in love with, is everything a hero aught to be: he did not have to accept Horry's proposal to take her instead of Elizabeth. He's a true gentleman, giving Horry the chance to explain herself and make her choices, even if he knows they aren't the best for her. He gave up his mistress when he took a wife, which many men of the age did not. The supporting cast is exceptional. The villain, Lord Robert Lethbridge, is not-over-the-top. He's a man with a grudge. Lady Massey, the former mistress, behaves like a jilted woman, but she never goes as far as Lethbridge in her revenge. Crosby Drelincourt, provides some comic moments as the dandified heir presumptive who feels his future has slipped away the day Marcus married Horry, though they have no child yet. But the best comedy comes from Viscount Pelham Winwood and his friend, Sir Roland Pommeroy. Their efforts to help Horry is a great piece of comedy. I was laughing so hard, I cried. I could not pick one quote from the entire escapade, so I chose something from earlier.

My mom loves these books. I'm getting them for her for Christmas. Excellent romance books, funny, interesting. The "Old English" way of speech can be difficult occasionally, but all in all, a very enjoyable read!

Amused, the Earl consents, believing her to be a more lively and interesting match. What follows is a whirlwind of humor, miscommunication, and patience of the Earl with his young new bride.

This book was cute and hilarious. Horatia (Horry)is very endearing to the reader. The story made me laugh out loud. The ending was cut a bit short for me but they usually are. I'd love to see this one in a movie!
Not a fan of the story, the characters or the dialog.
*Loved* this one!! This is absoultely one of my top three Heyer novels. Lord Rule is absolutely the very best & Heyer is at her all time best with witty & clever dialog. Setting is 1770's; in fact, in the "larger picture," England is trying to tame those rowdy rebels in the American colonies.
In this one, Lord Rule has offered to marry the oldest daughter of a genteel and well-placed, albeit impoverished, family. However, this oldest daughter is madly in love with a young gentleman trying to earn his place in the King's Army. Enter Horatia, the youngest sister, who very bravely offers to marry Lord Rule in place of her sister, strictly as a marriage of convenience, thus, giving Lord Rule the stability his family thingks he needs, the financial support his wife's famiy needs and the freedom for the oldest sister to marry her true love.

Delightful, fun novel about a marriage of convenience that turns into one of true love. One of Heyer's best novels.
This is one of my favorite and most hilarious Georgette Heyer romances. I read it at least once a year just for the joy of laughing out loud over a beloved cast of nutcase characters. I rate it 5 stars!---MLC
Not her best work--somewhat formulaic--and rather carelessly characterized. But hey, what do I know?

A very good Georgette Heyer! Anyone familiar with Heyer's work will recognize her talent in this book. Highly recommended for Georgette Heyer fans.
This is an absolutely charming Georgian novel (it took place during the American Revolution) with lots of light-hearted dialogue. Once I got over the large age discrepancy between the two main characters, the unfolding story was great. This is the first book I've read by Georgette Heyer and I enjoyed the humor of this playful story. Even better, I had the opportunity to hear Richard Armitage read it, so this story was drool-worthy.
Lord Rule is a wonderful character. But the humor really comes from the goofy, younger characters who think they can outwit him. He waits patiently for them to understand that he already knows where they've been and where they are going. I think Lord Rule was a bit bored by his existence until he met, then married Horatia. He certainly indulges her (think about all of her gambling) and waits for Horry to decide how she feels about him.Â
