The Convict and Other Stories
The Convict and Other Stories
Author: James Lee Burke
Set in locales along the Gulf coasts of Louisiana and Texas and on battlefields around the world. Raw, powerful, lyrical, these nine stories explore the themes now familiar to Burke's readership: loss and hard-won courage, betrayal and friendship, violence and heroism, and the inevitability of death. —

This collection of stories about strong southern men was a fascinating insight into so many lives. The men who encounter these moral dilemmas or life-altering events approach them in individual ways, but the stories still speak to everyone, and they posses enough individuality to make each story entirely different.

Ranging in ages from young boys still formulating their own opinions about the world, to men on the verge of death, remembering their own discoveries, each character is well developed and interesting.

I particularly enjoyed the pilot's own form of revenge against his wife's lover, and the young boys who watched their uncle and father make choices about right or wrong.
