I really like the premise of this book: the time frame is just after the French Revolution, & England is inundated with French emigrees. The first two books in this trilogy were 'The Conquest of Lady Cassandra' & 'The Surrender of Miss Fairbourne'. In this book, a social misfit, Viscount Kendale is suspicious of one Marielle Lyons, believing her to be a spy. They have both been traumatized by the war & are suspicious of each other & everything else. They succumb to a sexual attraction, which grows, but as a reader, I just didn't see, hear, or feel it. As a hero, the man is a clod, but he does save her father from imprisonment in France. There are a few loose strings left unanswered; perhaps the author will pick those up in her next novel. This one was just comme ci, comme ca.

I really do not like to read books in which the hero has a secret and the heroine has a secret. No, really, really! They will not tell each other their secret although the telling will make the outcome a lot easier for them. This is one of those books. However, I stuck it out and was glad I did. The last 75 pages were worth the irritation of waiting for the obvious to happen. It, not the obvious, did happen and it earned the four stars from me. Recommend!
