I've just finished reading "Coyote Waits" by Hillerman and it is the very best I've read so far, and my husband, too. It is exciting especially toward the end. Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee are two Navaho policemen who cover a lot of territory and are interesting fellows to follow in their pursuits.
Another wonderful novel by Tony Hillerman in the Leaphorn and Chee series.
Good rainy-day reading. Classic Hillerman.

great series - this one was published in 1990
A complex mystery involving a historical find, a mythical coyote, a killed Navajo Tribal policeman and a Navajo shamon. The shamon is found with the murder weapon, and refuses to talk! A quick read with a very powerful ending!

Leaphorn and Chee join forces in Navajo Country. As always, Hillerman writes lovingly of the people and the country of New Mexico and Arizona.
Like so many of the Hillerman tales this one is filled with descriptions of the beauty that can be found anywhere one is looking if their eyes are open to it.
Following the hunt for the killer through its many turns and twists is extremely enjoyable. So many paths blending and diverging.
Mr Hillerman weaves peices of the past and present into a tapestry that takes the reader along at a fun pace with vivid images.

Another early entry in the Leaphorn & Chee series as the two separately investigate the murder of a Navajo policeman and how -- or if -- it's connected to Navajo creation stories.
The car fire didn't kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez, a bullet did. Officer Jim Chee's good friend Del lies dead, and whiskey-soaked Navajo shaman is found with murder weapon. The old man is Ashie Pinto. He's quickly arrested for homicide and defended by a woman Chee could either love or loathe. But when Pinto won't utter a word of confession or denial, Lt. Joe Leaphorn begins an investigation. Soon, Leaphorn and Chee unravel a complex plot of death involving an historical find, a lost fortune...and the mythical Coyote, who is always waiting, and always hungry.
