Childress plays out his two hands here, civil right and husbandicide. Lucille kills her husband Chester, cuts his head off and hightails it out of town leaving her six children in the care of her mother. Chester's head accompanies her on her flight - he's "traveling" in a Tupperware lettuce keeper. Lucille's brother, Dove, the local coroner is also waging his own inner battles - civil rights and it's accompanying conflicts are alive and well in Industry, Alabama.

This is my first read by this author, so I don't know if his other book are like this, but I've never come across a story like this. There are two different story lines: one about civil rights in a small southern town, one about the crazy aunt who goes out to fulfill her dream in Hollywood. I laughed out loud several times. I WISH I knew people like this! I definitely recommend this book.

This book was laugh out loud funny in some parts and then dead serious in others. It was a great mix and I sure wasn't able to predict this ending. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I loved this book. The "southern" characters are outragous! Very funny!
