Childress plays out his two hands here, civil right and husbandicide. Lucille kills her husband Chester, cuts his head off and hightails it out of town leaving her six children in the care of her mother. Chester's head accompanies her on her flight - he's "traveling" in a Tupperware lettuce keeper. Lucille's brother, Dove, the local coroner is also waging his own inner battles - civil rights and it's accompanying conflicts are alive and well in Industry, Alabama.

This is my first read by this author, so I don't know if his other book are like this, but I've never come across a story like this. There are two different story lines: one about civil rights in a small southern town, one about the crazy aunt who goes out to fulfill her dream in Hollywood. I laughed out loud several times. I WISH I knew people like this! I definitely recommend this book.

This book was laugh out loud funny in some parts and then dead serious in others. It was a great mix and I sure wasn't able to predict this ending. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book is bizarre, touching, and hilarious all at the same time. From the cover...The story strikes out in two directions at once: Lucille's journey from Industry, Alabama to Hollywood, where she is determined to become a regular on the Beverly Hillbillies: and the coming-of-age of her 12-year-old nephew PeeJoe, who discovers the difference between 'white and NIgra' justice when Industry opens its new municipal swimming pool.
If you liked th emovie, you will roll with this book!

Hilarious book! Far better than the movie, which starred Melane Griffith. I think it would fall into the genre of Southern Macabre fiction. I highly recommend it.

LOL funny, but also sad, suspenseful, and about every other emotion you can think of to make a good book. Read the book first-a must, really, see the movie later. movie was good,true to the book, but I think you would get more from the book first.
This book is both funny and serious all at the same time. It's about a woman traveling to Hollywood with her murdered husband's head in Tupperware and a young boy standing up for what he believes is right. An easy read that I could not put down!! I think if you liked the movie, you'll love the book.
A crazy lady takes the reader on a crazy ride - a bit of hilarity and some graphic sex keeps you wondering how this lady is going to make it. It's a book that is hard to lay down because of the strangeness of it - but it is well written and you will find a lot of humor. Lucille always dreamed of being an actress but husband and children sort of got in her way - however, destined to be a "star" she begins her quest carrying a tupperware container from coast to coast bearing her husband's head.
