A great coming of age story and also a great trip down memory lane for those of us who are old enough to remember WWII and the years before. Although the ending does fall a bit flat, the book is well worth the read.

the book is mostly a narrative of very detailed events that don't really seem to have much refference to a part of the story. details for the sake of details. they paint a nice picture, but it isn't coherent enough for me to enjoy.

A great read by a talented writer. Trevanian paints the slum-life he grows-up in, the eccentric ladies; some with eccentric behaviour, some with odd behavior like his mother, and others that appeared strange. All, the crazy ladies of Pearl Street, as they appeared in his eyes, perhaps a product of reality of life in the slum for some. However, Trevanian's slum experiences didn't limit him. He has a profound way of expressing himself with words. Trevanian spent much of his childhood reading, which perhaps enabled him to be the writer he bacame. This was an enjoyable read for me. It gave insight into poverty, history relating to WWII, as well as enhancing my vocabulary....
