I have never given this low a rating to a book, but I couldn't even get past the first few chapters, much less finish it. The author is just too preachy and some of her "creative correcting" ideas left me feeling rather uncomfortable and I felt they crossed the line from correction to excessively punitive. This is not to say she doesn't have some positive ideas also, but they are techniques most parents could find elsewhere without having to sort through and weed out more extreme ideas. Overall, I would not recommed this book to any parent.

Great bible verses to have kids copy for correction. Some new ideas and some good laughs.

This book was not what I expected. While it does address correction and consequences, it is very religion based and relies heavily on Bible Scriptures which is not a method of correction I would employ. It has a few suggestions that could be used either as is or modified to eliminate the religious connotations if so desired but all in all, the vast majority of the books contents were not what I considered useful for my personal circumstance because my child is typically well behaved and well mannered but occasionally makes a poor choice without thinking it through so I was looking for ideas that would help me reinforce a lesson in this instances. This book was no help with that.

Written by the actress who played "Blair" on The Facts of Life. She has several tips for creatively displining children when they are acting disrespectfully, lying, whining, leaving messes, etc. She's mother to three kids.

I have not read this book. The reviews I read on Amazon.com were very disturbing. I found these examples of what is in the book on Amazon.com and felt strongly that I should share them here.
p.139 "Administering real correction--punishing a child when she has disobeyed--has to hurt a little to be effective, but that doesn't mean it has to be boring."
p.208 "Got any old hand or ankle weights in the garage? Have your child wear them around his ankles or carry them around for the day as punishment
p.203 "Use a pair of toy handcuffs to join two siblings who can't seem to get along. It's really fun to watch them try to eat dinner like this, or read a book, or take the garbage out, tasks I'll often assign them."
p.207 "If they are unable to cooperate with one another, they must play in the backyard, whether it's 30 degrees or 100 degrees outside."
p.75 Whelchel approves of filling a boy's room with manure!
p.138 "My favorite curve, however, is to say no to some reasonable request, like `May I go to the bathroom?'"

Lots of ideas plus some insight into how seasonal allergies and other factors can impact your child's behavior. There's a tool kit of Bible verses and ideas to use for most common childhood "offenses."

Honestly, I think this book and my parenting style are different. There were a few good ideas, but for the most part I thought she was a little too authoritarian for my liking.

If I could give this book a zero, I would. Lisa Whelchel's book is more like "creative ways to torture your child".... no real bibical basis to doing things to their children that would get anyone who trains animals arrested.

I love this book! Her idea's are great.
She has one that I LOVE: The discipline jar. Your kids write out different correction idea's (including one called: GRACE) and then if they do something to willfully disobey you, they pick a correction out of the jar...
there are a lot of ideas like this.
Anyway, I thought it was great!
Happy reading!

there are some pen underlinings and markings in the book but the pages are crisp and otherwise very clean. Read through once and marked for reference but otherwise, not used at all.
