Barbara Whitnell's new novel Cross Currents takes a page from M. M. Kaye, with its colorful and exgtroardinary setting of the hurricane swept West Indies at the end of the era of slavery. Dorcas Foley, the heroine, is headstrong but pregnant, and her domineering father marries her off to a short, simian salt raker who lives on Grand Cay; a harsh and inhospitable environment for a lady.

What ensues is a rich and dramatic story of love and loyalty in a fascinating historical context. Dorcas grows to love her simian spouse, and as her now legitimate child grows during a time of political turmoil, history catches up to a family and ends the novel with a shocking and brutal murder.
