The story begins in the tense summer before the outbreak of World War II. Armand de Villers, Ambassador of France, has been called home from Washington. Crossing the ATlantic on France's supremely glamorous Normandie, he and his young American wife, Liane, meet Nick and Hillary Burnham. Nick owns one of the world's greatest steel empires;Hillary is a spoiled, senual Boston beauty for whom no marriage and no one man, could ever be enough. The spark between Nick and Liane is instantaneous, but it is not admitted by either of them. Not until a second fateful crossing, when each is forced to flee France without family or spouse, do Liane and Nick confront the power-and the hopelessness-of their passion.
On that dangerous voyage, suspended between two worlds, all is fair and beautiful, including their brief, bright love affair. But the crossing ends; Nick is sitll trapped in his charade of a marriage by his love for his son, Johnny and Liane is tied by love and loyalty to the husband she left behind in France. Liane and Nick walk away fro their love, each torn by a loss time cannot lessen. But neither of them knows the new heartbreak that lies ahead, the conflict between bravery and bitter betrayal each will face.
Moving between Paris, New York, and San Francisco, and vividly portraying the events of the century's most turbulent decade, Crossings carries Liane toward a final desperate choice-and the twist of fate that brings her face to face with the truth her heart has always known; Strong people cannot be defeated....

Ms. Steel should stick to modern day contemporary fiction and romance. Not one of her best.

These books are in good shape but their not really the kind I like to read.My Mother-In-Law passed away a couple months ago and she had the whole set so would like to trade for books that I like to read.

To use a quote from Waldenbooks, "A triumphant heroine, a poignant story of conflicting passions". A love story. As Daniel Steele tells the compelling story of a woman caught between conflicting passions and divided loyalties- a story that is full, passionate, and straight from the heart. from the inside cover: Liane Crockett de Villiers- It is the tense summer before the outbreak of World War II. She is crossing the Atlantic with her husband, the Ambassador of France, when she first meets Nick Burnham. The spark between Liane and Nick is instantaneous, yet not until a second crossing, when each is forced to flee France without spouse or family, will they confront the full power of their passion. Moving between paris, New York and San Francisco, vividly portraying the events of the century's most turbulent decade, Danielle Steel tells the compelling story of a woman caught between conflicting passions and divided loyalties - a story that is full, passionate, and straight from the heart.

Still a big fan after all these years, and Crossings is still a favorite of mine. I love how she incorporates the Normandie, Titanic, World War II and everthing in this book. Plus the love story of Liane and Nick is great as well. Makes you never want to give up hope. Great read!!

When Liane crossed the Atlantic the future seemed bright and beautiful. Only the image of a face haunted her new life in France.

Then the war sent her on a second fateful crossing, leaving her husband and family far behind. Suspended between two worlds, Liane was swept into a passionate love affair, a bright, brief moment of total happinesss. Would the voyage seal her love forever, or leave her stranded on the shores of heartbreak and despair?

Book Description
Despite rumors of impending war, the majestic ship Normandie makes its transatlantic voyage from Washington D.C., to France. Aboard is beautiful, American-born Liane De Villiers, devoted to her much-older husband, the French ambassador to the United States, and her two daughters. In this poignant tale set against France and America in World War II, Danielle Steel creates the most heart-wrenching love story of her stellar career. For the millions who have made this phenomenal writer their favorite storyteller Ms. Steel has fashioned her strongest, most triumphant heroine. Liane Crockett de Villiers is a character readers will adore, envy, and identify with-a passionate, vulnerable woman caught by circumstances beyond her control in a net of conflicting passions and divided loyalties.

The cover of this paperback shows a scene from the miniseries version starring Christopher Plummer and Cheryl Ladd. I see very little wrong with the book other than a scuffed corner and obvious yellowing of the pages. I've not read this book - it was given to me, as were others I will list, and does not fall in my interest range. I hope you enjoy it!!
