Seventh in the series; I would suggest starting from the beginning. Anna starts this book the same person as she's always been - angry, impulsive, hot-headed and certain she's the only one who can do whatever it is and the hell with anyone else. By the end, she's maybe come to a better understanding about her life as it is now. But that's all that happens, I don't see that it advances the "Chosen" plot much at all. It's still a fast read, although for me it suffered from a big flaw - the idea that vampire Anna could become mortal again and go back to her previous life. Yeah, right...and how long do you think mortal Anna would live after the change? Chael would kill her and all her family immediately just for revenge. And she would have thought of that too, so I really think Stein kinda missed the boat on that one. The Navajo thing was kind of odd for me as I've just been reading Tony Hillerman as well, the juxtaposition of his very accurate descriptions of Navajo religious beliefs against Stein's descriptions made me fall out of the story a bit. It's a fantasy, so Stein can have fantasy Navajos too, but for me they didn't come across very well.
