One of the worst I've ever tried to read, very poorly written, mostly descriptions and not enough story, writing style is very poor

Do you love physiological thrillers as mush as me? Here's one for you: Quinn's a stereotypical millennial in her early twenties, both self-centered and lacking in basic reasoning skills. âSmart decisions aren't really my forte,â she says. Characters don't need to be likable, of course, but I couldn't quite tell whether Quinn's childish, whiny demeanor was intentional. Unable to think about anyone but herself, more than a quarter of the novel passes before Quinn is able to stop navel-gazing and try calling her missing roommate's cell phone. Finally, crafting a compelling plot twist is no easy task. Done right, the twist feels both surprising and inevitable, thanks to subtle seeds planted throughout the story. When that âa-ha!â moment hit us, it should be accompanied by âHow did I not see that coming?!â

(Chicago) Esther Vaughan has disappeared. Her roommate, Quinn is at first concerned, then several things happen that has Quinn angry. Evidently, before she disappeared, she had placed an ad in the paper for a new roommate. She had also withdrawn $1500 from her bank. And than Quinn learns that Esther had made arrangements to have their locks changed.

So Quinn wasn't always a good roommate ... but then she discovers that Esther's previous roommate had died of an allergic reaction to eating something that Esther had prepared. So is Esther planning on having Quinn killed? Has she ever known who Esther really was?

(Michigan) A mysterious woman shows up in a small cafe where Alex Gallo is a dishwasher. He is immediately drawn to the young woman. As they become friends, Alex thinks that this is the woman for him.

But there are dark secrets everywhere.

I have to confess, I didn't think I would ever get through this entire book. It started out so slowly and although there is some suspense, this was not what I had experienced reading this author's other books. I almost gave up .... but at 80% (kindle) I sat up and took notice. Things were happening.. beginning to make some sort of sense. The suspense ratcheted up by leaps and bounds. And it was a race to get to the final chapter to see how it would end.

My recommendation is .... read this book. But be prepared to take it nice and easy as the story builds and you get to know the characters. It's all well worth it in the end.

Many thanks to the author / Harlequin (UK) Limited / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This book started so slow I could fall asleep while reading! Three unexciting main characters alternately narrate the story. I plotted on anyway because I loved Ms. Kubica's The Good Girl and figured something exciting had to come about.

The second part turned around and finally I was interested and stimulated by the events.

SPOILER
Poor Alex. He was the only character I liked and felt sorry for. He was a good son, stayed at home to care for his father who turned to drink after his wife left him. Alex did not deserve what happened. Very sad finale.

Another interesting thriller from Kubica. It started rather slowly, but kept my interest and had me guessing until the end. The last third of the book is when the real action starts and it all begins to fall into place!

Wow! I was quite surprised by all the inner workings of this plot in the end. As I read the book, I thought for awhile that I knew exactly what was going on and that it was quite predictable, but I was wrong. I love when a book surprises me! Well done!

This is the 3rd of Kubica's books that I have read. It is a standalone thriller with interesting characters and a plot with lots of twists and turns. The story gets off to a slow start with two separate narrators telling two separate stories. Piece by piece you begin to see how these stories can be related but you are kept guessing until the very end. Kubica writes in such a way that you think you know where the story will go but you are always proved wrong. I like books that surprise you and that's what her books are all about. I'm looking forward to her next book and I would recommend her books to those who like psychological thrillers.

A well thought out, twisted plot! A page turner that will have you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait to read Mary Kubica's next book!!
