I was on pins and needles waitng for a copy of this book. Sadly, it was not as good as her Mercy Thompson series. I found myself skimming through quite a bit and really, only the last few chapters were good.

Let 1st start by being honest. I love Patricia Briggs. She weaves a story like no one else. Absolutely my favorite author. Now that that is out of the way...I will have to say while I liked the story I found Anna to be whiney and annoying thru out the 1st half of the book, but as the story progressed I did come to like her much better. As with all Patricia Briggs books, the writing and the story are incredible. I easily give it 4 stars. I would suggest reading the short in On the Prowl prior to reading this book. I found Anna annoying and I read the short....If I hadn't read the short, I think I would have hated her. A great new spin off of the Mercy series, maybe we can hope Sam will get one too!

Ongoing story of the romance between Alpha wolf Charles Cornick and Omega wolf Anna Latham. This story picks up where it left off in the On the Prowl Anthology. Anna returns to Montana with Charles and his father the Marrock. Charles is trying to heal from exposure to silver, and court Anna, when he is assigned an important assignment from his father. The courtship is complicated due to Anna's history. We learn more details regarding the how and why of her past abuses. We meet some interesting personalities in the Pack. The Marrock's mate is a real winner. Anna goes with Charles on his assignment, and they are both in danger. Loved the continuation of the romance. The conclusion to the assignment seemed to drag. I love Charles and Anna and I'll read about them again. Love Patricia Briggs.

Cry Wolf is the first book in the start of a new urban fantasy series by Patricia Briggs, which is set in the same world as her Mercy Thompson series and runs in parallel with it. Although I say urban fantasy, this series does have a greater focus on romance than the Mercy series, which is something the author points out herself in interviews I've seen online. Fans of Mercy looking into reading this series should expect to see a lot about the relationship developing between Anna and Charles along with any action.
I strongly recommend reading "Alpha and Omega" in the On the Prowl anthology before reading Cry Wolf (reading the Mercy series isn't necessary though). In that short story we learn how our protagonists met.

I can only repeat what the other reviews have said, even if you've read the Mercy series, you will absolutely want to read the short story entitled 'Alpha & Omega' found in the anthology On The Prowl. This story gives you all of the necessary backstory on Anna, how she was abused by her pack, how she met Charles & how they became mates.
If you are a reader of the Mercy series, you will appreciate this one simply for the chance to learn even more about Bran (the Marrock), Charles, Samuel & the pack in Montana.

This is not a Mercy Thompson-series book, but apparently the start of a new series. It just doesn't measure up. The main character is weak to the point you wanted to slap her and say "Snap out of it already!", the male is stoic to the point of absurdity and the existence and purpose of an "Omega" is never fully explained. Come back, Mercy!!

I really enjoyed this new storyline in the Mercy Universe. I really loved getting a little more insight into Bran's character and the family dynamic of the Werewolves.

I have to admit that compared to other novels by Briggs, this one didn't hold my attention as well. The story seemed forced, and the conclusion took way too long. Even with reading the first story in "On the Prowl" and the Mercedes series, I still felt that things were assumed about the world in which Briggs' characters live.

Maybe not quite as engaging characters as the Mercy series, but this book certainly kepat MY attention for a fast read. The characters are flawed and carry a lot of baggage which gets in the way of your warming up to them right away. But the more troubles they have to overcome, the more you appreciate their triumph in the end. I also appreciated becoming more acquainted with Bran and learning more about his family and his powers of control over his pack.

This is the first book I have read of Patricia Briggs. I have to agree with a lot of other reviews that Anna was kind of annoying. However I felt that she improved later on in the book. However I did end up liking the book enough that I went looking for more from Briggs and thank god since I really like the mercy books I've found. Anyways, I give it 3.5 for being an interesting storying/keeping my attention and improving the annoying character.

The story of the developing relationship between Anna and Charles is one of my favorites in all of fiction. And Ms Briggs is a fine story teller in many other ways.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good love story, and isn't too picky that the world its set in be purely realistic.

I really enjoyed this book. As soon as I bought it I couldn't put it down. I finished it in a day.
This being the first book in the series, it was a little confusing at first. I thought it was the second book. I felt there were a few weird parts in the book. But over all a 4.5 rating.

As much as I love the Mercy Thompson series, I wasn't going to like this series as much....I was wrong. Wonderfully so.
The characters are likeable, strong, fallible, entertaining & interesting.
The brand new relationship between Charles and Anna has them working through a lot of emotions & feelings. I really love Patricia Briggs I've read her Mercy Thompson series and was totally enamoured! I wish I had read the anthology that included the short story that began the series. I did enjoy the book but I felt like a kept waiting for something to happen and then all the action took place in the last few pages. I also really didn't like the time spent developing a character and getting to know and like him only to have him killed very uneventfully. I did like the relationship between Charles and Anna and its developeing. I'm not a big fan of characters riddled with issues and the one step forward two steps back style of courtship. I don't mind a slow build up and I understand trust issues but, either you do or you don't. I love Patricia Briggs' style of writing it's like having coffee with a friend. It is the perfect blend of two of my favorites, Charlaine Harris and Kim Harrison. It was worth the time to read but it's not quite as entertaining as Mercy lacked the humor and had a more serious tone.
Very good. Gives more context to Brigg's werewolf realm. Good character development and plot. In some ways I like this spinoff series better than her main series, Mercy Thompson. A good read. HIghly recommend.

I love Patricia Briggs, and look forward to each new installment of her Mercy Thompson series. However, I was initially disappointed with this book. The main issue was that we're dropped into Anna and Charles' story after some critical issues have already happened, and things aren't initially explained. If you haven't already read the short story in 'On The Prowl' (and I hadn't), then you're lost for the first few chapters. While I did eventually get into and enjoy Anna and Charles' story, it would have been better if there was more clarification at the start.

An interesting and enjoyable story that gives us further insight into the werewolf society in Montana that we see glimpses of in the Mercy Thompson books. There are references to events from the short story that the main character originated in, but despite not having read that story yet, I found the references did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. I'd still like to read the story some day, as the main character is engaging and undergoing a process of growing and accepting who she is. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson books.
I felt like I was missing something here. It seemed like the author had put this book together as an afterthought from her other books (which I haven't read). She didn't seem to develop the characters very well in the book and because of this, I didn't really care what happened.

Did not care for this story. While reading the story I felt like I was missing a side story. I made sure that I was reading the first book in the series. The story started off like it was a sequel, and you as a reader had to pick up the pieces. Nope did not like this story at all.

I liked this series a lot, I think that I would would have understood the books a little better had I read the Mercy series first, just a thought.
Very enjoyable book. Anna is such a strong person in spite of all the abuse she's lived through. Unlike some in the paranormal romance area, Briggs doesn't rely on unnecessary gore and explicit sex, she has a decent plot and the characters come off the pages and become quite real. I hope she continues this into more books.
I am a die hard fan of Briggs' Were Wolf series. She has her own spin on Vampires and her Skin Walker character is just an adventure to read. She infuses great personality into her various characters which makes this series a wonderful tale indeed.

I like this series. Very interesting to see more of Charles Cornick, the enforcer. And Anna's discovery of who she is is well done. I have Bk 2 on my shelf ready to go.
I liked this book. I really wanted to read Anna's story from her original pack - didn't realize there was a story in an anthology. The book wasn't action packed - but it held my interest and was a nice love story. I look forward to the next in the series.
At first, I really didn't like this one as much as the Mercy Thompson series... I think a lot of it had to do with the opening and the very strong feeling of missing something. When I found out that a short story was the real beginning and then couldn't find it any of the bookstores by me, I was really disappointed and frustrated. But, after I gave up looking and let the story start moving, I started to really like it. I do still prefer the Mercy Thompson series, but I am looking forward to continuing to read this series as well.

The book starts after the short story that appears in On The Prowl which I didn't know when I read the book. I kept feeling like I'd missed a book before, but it didn't take away for the enjoyment of Cry Wolf. Cry Wolf also ties in to Patricia Briggs books based on her character Mercy Thompson. It was a nice supernatural adventure with lots of werewolf pack dynamics.
For me it took a little while to get into the book unlike other books that Patricia Briggs wrote. Once I finally got into the book, it was a don't put down book.
I love this book. Lots of action. Read the Anthology On The Prowl to get the story of how Anna and Charles meet. This book continues their story. Mercy is mentioned but does not appear. Sneek Peek of Mercy's next book is in the back of this book. Charles' wolf has already claimed Anna as his mate at first sight. Usually wolf is last to claim mate in a relationship. Charles & Anna play catch up to their wolves. They try to take it slow but a rogue wolf and an insane witch have other plans. Charles' dad, Bran, and brother, Samuel, are both in this book. I love the Mercy series so I'm happy to read about other characters in the series.

Cry Wolf, the first book, is written from the perspective of Charles Cornnick, son of and enforcer to the North American werewolves, and Anna, an Omega wolf (definition of Omegas are a bit sketchy, but it seems that they are a wolf that acts as a calming influence to wolves. Helping them repress their baser wolf instincts.). Anna was unwillingly changed into a werewolf by her astoundingly abusive former pack. Her and Charles meet as he comes in to clean up after her pack's corrupt Alpha. As fate has it, they are invitably drawn to each other as mates. You can practically feel the chemistry between Charles and Anna. I also really enjoyed watching Anna's character develop from a reluctant submissive to fulfilling her role as an Omega. Soon book 2 comes out, Hunting Ground. yay!

The author has well-timed pacing, interesting and sympathetic characters and takes inventive directions with the plot. I particularly liked her strong female characters and the idea that females need not compete with men by trying to dominate them in the male pattern.

First Patricia Briggs book I've read. Must say, I'm sorry I started off with this one instead of the Mercy series. I just couldn't get into it. Between dragging in many parts, failing to explain the Omega plot, and dragging tons of boring characters into the mix, I put it down without getting to the ending. The last few chapters might have been great, but if the first book doesn't catch, it's as good as in the throw pile. Also must read the Alpha and Omega in On the Prowl, otherwise the story won't make sense.
What a refreshing change from books like "Witchling" by yasmine galenorn, which was interesting in concept but so poorly written that I wonder what the editor was thinking. This book does the job: romance, fantasy, and the prerequisite insurmountable task accomplished. I liked and plan to read the sequel...as soon as I can get my hands on it!

This was not as good as the Mercy Thompson series. It took over 150 pages for action to develop which is way, way too slow. There is not a lot of info on Anna and what she can and can't do until very late in the book - too much musing by characters.
I got this book from here and I never read Patricia Briggs book before, and I found my self completely messed up while reading Cry Wolf. I got On The Prowl on my wish list as also the Mercy Thomson series, to get more formerly interested in the story line of the Weres, witches and Vamps. Once I start reading more of Briggs' books then I will reread Alpha & Omega series

I Loved this book... I just read some of the other reviews and how they thought that Anna was too weinie.. well yeah!!! geez think about what she went through, and I bet ya'll could just come out like nothing ever happened..RIGHT!!!! It's a keeper for me!!!!
