Caren has reluctantly returned home for a job and is taken back in time to discover hidden secrets about her family's past. What she does with this information is very interesting!
A working single mom, Caren was a fantastic character who was struggling with being a boss, but also a hometown girl. I loved her inner battle with herself and finding her place. With some mystery and intrigue this book had a great creepy factor that kept me turning and turning the pages! I wanted to know who the killer was and why they committed the crime and I was quite satisfied with the outcome! (no spoilers here!!)
A fantastic piece of southern fiction that takes you back in time, but through the eyes of current people. The twists and turns were timed perfectly and I would dare anyone to be able to put this book down at any point!

For a book that is labeled mystery I found a lot of it was predictable but sometimes addicting to read. I say addicting because although I figured out who was working with the murderer I didnt figure that Caren would keep so much from the police. The writing was okay I am not sure why but I could tell this was a newer author. It was interesting that the love interest part did not overwhelm the story, like some mystery books do.

I felt like the book started in the middle. There was no preface, it just jumped into the middle of the story. That trend continued throughout the book to me- I felt lost. Did not even finish the whole thing.

The story starts out slowly while the author sets up the characters and the backstory of the plantation. From that point, it picks up speed and is hard to put down. Caren is the thoroughly modern manager of Belle Vie, a one time sugar plantation in Louisiana. It is now a tourist destination, with every aspect of its past preserved, including the slave quarters and an ancient mystery. The discovery of a body begins her research into the history of the place and the past unsolved murder, who was also an ancestor of hers. Clues unravel slowly, right up to the last page. Nearly impossible to put down - I recommend this book! D.
This book started slowly and didn't build my interest. At about a third of the way through it, I found myself wishing it had been better edited, wondering if the author purposely chose certain words and if she couldn't have done better. I just lost interest, despite the very good reviews.
First time read for this author. Enjoyed the book. Set in Louisiana post-Katrina on a centuries old plantation turned into a museum/historic location. Great location descriptions. A body turns up on the property - a young woman who was working the cane fields adjacent the property. Good mystery uncovering hidden family ties and secrets from the past coming into the light.
This book has a higher wishlist for other isbns, making it a very popular book for PBS readers in 2015.
