The protagonist in this novel is a man, who is left by his wife of almost two decades when she decides that being a housewife and mother is not enough for her anymore and returns to Harvard to persue her Master's Degree...Oliver Watson is left alone with their children and the only woman to help is their beloved, but aging, housekeeper. Despite Sarah's promises that everything will remain the same, and that she will visit on weekends, she never returns, not once, to visit...and Oliver quickly jumps into raising their kids alone. Sometimes hilarious, poignant throughout, this is a tale of a father's love, the things he sacrifices for his wife, his children, and his career...until he finally finds what he thought he had all along...the perfect life...

It's a very touching story that takes a man's view about family commitment and love between father and children. It shows real life problems and a marriage gone sour, because out of nowhere, Sarah announces that she wants to go to graduate school. 200 miles away. Alone. It's a believable story and the characters all seem like someone we know. You just want to reach out and give Oliver a hug! There are plenty of tears and heartfelt moments from beginning to end. It shows us the pain and joys that go inside a man's heart. Definitely worth reading.

Excellent story line and interestinf characters. Highly recommend this one.
A gut-wrenching, sad story, that will keep you reading until the end! So touching and moving, about the importance of family. As you read the painful journeys of all the characters you truly feel like you have a kinship with the them.
Oliver Watson has worked hard to build a safe, predictable world. But suddenly it seems to dissolve around him. The marriage he thought was perfect crumbles after eighteen years. His mother is killed in an untimely accident, leaving his father newly widowed and trying, at seventy-two, to build a new world for himself. Oliver's eldest son rejects him and reaches out towards a life of his own, a life he is not mature enough to handle. Melanie, his daughter, unequivocally blames her father for her mother's desertion, while Sam, the 'baby', is too shaken to deal with it at all.
Now the only parent, 'Daddy' must somehow cope with his troubled family, even as he explores an unknown world of new responsibilities, new women, and new experiences that are funny, sad, touching, scary, poignant, but always real.

"Daddy" is one of those books that makes you say "See, everything turns out alright in the end". This is a story of heartbreak, family dysfunction, unconditional love and failure. But, true to Danielle Steel form the family emerges a bit different but better. Good beach read.
