The general storyline is interesting enough- The Porter sisters were deserted by their father at a young age and now their once-strong and independent mother is old and ill and decisions need to be made about her future care. One sister, Jane, has a tremendous secret that she feels is ready to be revealed (thats why she returns to her hometown) even though it upsets her ill mother and caretaking sister to think about this secret becoming public after so many years. The story (and secret) involves a forbidden romance and I found myself skimming through chapters because of its predictability. The end is satisfying, as I someone knew it would be, but the writing lacks depth and in the end I felt as though Id read a script for a soap opera.

Again, Luanne Rice takes topics we've read about a million times before and some how still manages to hold our interest. And she never gives us a cheesy ending, anything forced or fake. It's as real as real life can get. I'd recommend this book for anyone who enjoys romance or family stories. The story keeps you interested and the characters endear themselves to you.

A really well written story of family connections and emotions. Jane gave up a daughter for adoption when she was young and comes back to her home town years later. Dylan has shattering memories from his life as a federal agent and he comes home to find peace working his family's apple orchard.

Another great book by Luanne Rice! A disfunctional family tries to make it work when Jane returns home to help take care of her mother. Jane runs a successful bakery in New York City. Her sister has cared for their mother for many years. Jane and Syvlie attempt to rebuild their relationship while caring for their mother and of course romance comes too.

Jane Porter is traveling back to her hometown of Twin Rivers, Rhode Island, with a heavy heart. She has stayed away as much as possible for the last 15 years, while her sister, Sylvie, has remained in town and taken care of their ill mother. The girls' mother was once a proud school principal who raised her brilliant daughters alone after her husband deserted them and then, because of her pride and fear of abandonment, convinced young Jane to give her newborn child up for adoption when the father wanted nothing to do with them. Jane has always regretted that decision and now wants to see her daughter. The opportunity arises when she meets her daughter's uncle, Dylan, who has lost his wife and daughter. Dylan and Jane both have an aura of tragedy about them. He and Jane become involved, and through him she develops a relationship with her daughter, Chloe, without revealing the fact that she is Chloe's birth mother. Once again, Rice captures the wonder of life, warts and all, and puts in a bid for hope. Her latest is a stellar example of why Rice continues to gain popularity.

Acclaimed for her insightful depiction of the magic and mystery in everyday life and relationships, Luanne Rice is one of today's most gifted novelists. Now the NY Times bestselling author delivers her most powerful book yet - the story of a man and a woman forced to choose between the past that haunts themand the love that won't let them go.
