This was my first Dandy Gilver novel, and I didn't know where it fell in the series, it was the only one on the library shelf.

I had high expectations, it sounded great, British/Scottish, 1920's, mystery! Awesome, I love all those things!

But, unfortunately the story fell really flat. I was confused the entire novel about the relationships between all the characters, which really distracted from the story line. Also, I found the heroine, Dandy Gilver, somewhat boring. For a detective, she didn't seem to do much actual detecting, she just lucked into everyone in the story telling her personal details about their lives that they had no reason to tell. Also, since I have not read any book in the series before, I was unsure for the first half of the book if her partner was her husband/lover or just a friend (turns out it was just a friend).

I might give another Dandy Gilver story a try, probably the first one in the series, since there seems to be the makings of a great story in there. And, maybe this particular novel was not one of the best ones.

So, overall I wouldn't recommend it for someone who has never read any of the other books in the series, but I did stick it out and finish the entire book, so it wasn't completely un-readable.
