This is a wonderful mystery about an undertaker who lives in the NC mountains. He is the kind of undertaker who cares about the family of those who died. The characters are believable and so is the mystery. This is not a shoot-em' up kind of mystery. The undertaker is a former police officer from Charlotte, NC, who moves back to the mountains to help his parents run the funeral business. What is also great about this book is that there are just enough characters to keep track of and the book isn't too long. The book has a family of characters who most likely will be in succeeding books. I will want to read the rest of the books in this series.

This story starts with a powerful bang with mentally unbalanced Dallas Willard appearing at the burial service for his grandmother and shooting two relatives to death and turning his shotgun onto the undertaker, Barry Clayton so that Barry could go to heaven and tell Dallas's grandmother that no one would be taking her property!
This story is an excellent mystery involving the preservation of land worth $3 million and a roller coaster ride of murder and betrayal.
I would highly recommend this story. I especially enjoyed it since the background for this story takes place in Western North Carolina.
