My Amazon review - I've read many romance novels where sex is all two people in a marriage of convenience have in common, but this book is special. Miller instills a level of tenderness in this relationship that is missing from so many novels, and makes the reader ache for both the hero who still mourns his dead wife and the heroine who is trying her best to connect with him. The conflict of wanting someone and yet not really trusting them is so sharp in this story, yet the reader always has a sense of hope for this special couple and it is very realistic when the walls finally come down. This book is a keeper for Miller fans or those new to her work.

This book is built on an interesting premise: A young woman "outlaw" marries a man in order to escape the hangman's noose. Twenty year-old Jolie McKibben has a noose around her neck and is standing in a hay wagon - waiting for the hangman to say the last words she will hear.
A young farmer, Daniel Beckham, sees the imminent death of the young lady and the judge offers him the opportunity to marry her by invoking the "wedding ordinance."
Actually, this is THE WIVES OF BOWIE STONE (by Maggie Osborne) in reverse. If you've read that treasure, you understand the basis of this novel. The story takes place in Prosperity, Washington Territory in 1877.
There is plenty of action and the cause-and-effects are reasonable and interesting. I couldn't put the book down and read it in a few hours. This is one of the best LLM books I've read.
The only issues I had revolved around the resolution of the novel. The last 7 pages were chock full of paragraphs tying up the large number of threads running through the book. It seemed a bit rushed.
** SPOILER ** Also, the person who finds Jolie (in the last pages) has miraculously recovered from a serious ailment - which seems impossible in such a short time frame.
However, this is an engaging book with lots of twists and turns. Enjoy!

Daniel vowed never to love again after the death of his wife and children. Jolie was about to be hung for a bank robbery she did not commit. Due to a quirk in the law, by marrying Jolie, Daniel saved her from death but he told her he would never love her. Jolie just wants to belong, be loved and have a family of her own.
A strong willed woman who speaks her mind, a man of few words- can they have a true marriage? This book has love, romance, suspense, and even humor. Weep one moment, laugh the next. A wonderful story told by a great storyteller. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a book with happy endings.

This was a fun, romantic read with some tragic and fun all in one. Don't miss this one!!
Hot bed and a cowering heroine.
While the hero and heroine can burn and explode like a supernova, I'd like to note that more than half the time the heroine's inaction because of fear from the beginning of the book to the end is quite annoying.
It is true she does not have trouble speaking her mind at normal times but when it matters she just withdraw like turtle.

Very good! The author builds the characters together very well and gives the story a strong emotional pull that I did not expect.
When a woman has to choose between death and marriage to a total stranger, she must be in a dire predicament....
And for Jolie McKibben, about to pay by hanging for a terrible crime she didn\'t commit, salvation by marriage couldn\'t come a moment too soon. Housekeeping for Daniel Beckham, a widower who invoked the town\'s wedding ordinance to rescue Jolie from the gallows, is better than the alternative...but understanding the silent stranger who is now her husband might just about kill her.
Daniel doesn\'t believe in Jolie\'s innocence. And despite his willingness to marry the pretty, defiant \"outlaw\" on the spot, the prosperous farmer had little to say to her after \"I do.\" But for Jolie, their arrangement of convenience soon deepens into a rich and vibrant attraction that sets her trembling with desire in Daniel\'s presence. Somehow, she would win his love, body and soul. Unless the desperados on her trail shatter the fragile, trusting bond of husband and wife....

An unlikely bride & groom, add some danger and a sizzling romance.
This is another good book from LLM. Jolie ran with a bad couple of men and she found herself at the end of a hangman's noose. She avoids hanging when Daniel says he'll marry her. Romance ensues along with trouble from her past. This was a very easy read LLM has a talent for writing a good story to go along with the romance. Very enjoyable book.

To avoid the hangman's noose, young Jolie McKibben enters into a marriage of convenience with farmer Daniel Beckham, and finds that the sense of trust, the shared work and hardships lead inevitably to true love.
Enchanted by the beauty of Jolie McKibben as she awaits death by hanging, Daniel Beckham stops her execution by invoking the town's wedding ordinance and agreeing to marry her. The most wildly romantic novel yet from the author of Caroline and the Raider. To avoid the hangman's noose, young Jolie McKibben enters into a marriage of convenience with farmer Daniel Beckham, and finds that the sense of trust, the shared work and hardships lead inevitably to true love.
DANIEL WEDS JOLIE TO SAVE HER FROM HANGING FOR A CRIME SHE DIDN'T COMMIT. HE NEEDED A HOUSEKEEPER AND SHE NEEDED TO SAVE HER LIFE. COULD SHE CONVINCE HIM OF HER INNOCENCE?

Literally read this book in a day, such a great story!
Jolie McKibben figured that when a woman has to choose between death and marriage to a total stranger she must be in a desperate predicatment. And Jolie standing under the hot sun with a noose around her neck, surely was. But something the defiant life of her chin or her frightened blue green eyes had caught the attention of Daniel Beckham. He stopped the hanging by invoking the towns wedding ordiance and married the pretty outlaw on the spot. So Jolies hide was saved only her pride was wounded. Daniel didn't believe she was innocent and he barely spoke on the drive out to his farm. Worse still two desperados were on her trail and she din't dare confide her troubles to her new husband. Yet under the star splashed Western sky Jolie trembled whenever this rugged giant of a man came near. Now she hungered for his kisses, dreamed of his touch and knew she would do anything a woman could to win his love.
