Dark Caribbean Author:Rick Magers DARK CARIBBEAN was written from the author's Ship's Log during the years he was an offshore commercial lobsterman, and then from his Aircraft Log when he was a drug smuggler. During the years he trapped lobster in the Caribbean he encountered modern day pirates several times, who were stealing his catch...often $50,000 or more. Eventually they b... more »egan loading some of his 3000 traps to carry them near their own trapping grounds. After warning them, it continued, so he determined that they would rather die than build their own traps to pull. THEY DID! Disgusted with the shooting, killing, and stress, he and his partner re-located to a small fisherman's village 33 miles east of Naples Florida. Everglade's City could have been the answer to their dream of simply being left alone to fish for their living. It was, until the day another stone crabber approached and asked, "y'all wanna haul some pot with us." Everglade's City was the marijuana import hub of South Florida during the 70s. Hundreds of tons were carried into the Everglades in the vicinity of EC, and by the 80s things were getting pretty hot around that small town in the Everglades. Men who a few years earlier were driving rusty old pickups, and living in modest little houses, were now driving towncars and sportscars... parked in front of plush new homes. The author and his wife of 41 years climbed into their airplane and headed south toward Nicaragua... his lifetime best friend and ex-partner climbed into his boat to go into the Gulf of Mexico and meet a Colombian freighter to pick up one more load... He was released from Miami Federal in 2005 after serving 14 years. He is currently trapping again out of Key West; even though he's now in his 60s. The author's wife died on in 2002... just him and his dogs now... they live alone in the North Georgia cabin he built for them to enjoy their old age. He turned 73 on 6-30-08 but still writes 12 hours each day. The Authors name is Rick Magers. Rick has been writing for half a century and has traveled the world - visiting many countries in search of stories.« less
