Dark Roads
Author: Chevy Stevens
The Cold Creek Highway stretches close to five hundred miles through British Columbia’s rugged wilderness to the west coast. Isolated and vast, it has become a prime hunting ground for predators. I debated on the rating of this book and settled for the 4, it is riddled with so much description that you can skip a lot of pages before anything happens, then you hit a point you can move forward again, then you can skip pages of descriptions without missing a thing to get on with the story.
I found the part about Beth boring and a lot of it unnecessary with all the descriptions used just to get her drunk and to her car/motel
I liked Hailey but yet found it unbelievable that she could survive off the grid for so long without anyone suspecting something and again just too many descriptions that you can skip, I mean do we need to know in 6 pages how to feed a dog?
So I'll still with the 4 rating because it is a good story but just a little too long

Chevy Stevens is an excellent storyteller. I read her book, Still Missing, so I was anxious to read this one. I was not disappointed. The story was haunting and chilling and based on true events which happened on The Highway of Tears in northern British Columbia, Canada where girls went missing and many were brutally murdered. Hailey McBride's dad has died in an accident so she has been taken in by her aunt Lana and her new husband, Vaughn, a member of the police force. Hailey finds Vaughn to be very controlling and inappropriate towards her so she decides to leave home and takes refuge in a cabin in the woods. Her best friend, Amber, is murdered by the serial killer who has been slaying the girls on the highway. Hailey finds Amber's body and secretly contacts Vaughn's partner. Tension builds from this point and does not let go until the surprise ending. The plot is action-packed and fast-paced with interesting characters. I'm looking forward to reading more of Stevens' books and highly recommend this one. I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martins Press for a free copy for an honest review

After the death of her father, seventeen-year-old Hailey McBride was sent to live with her Aunt Lana and Lana's new husband Vaughn, a local police Sargeant in Cold Creek. Hailey is not comfortable around Vaughn. He tells her that young women have been disappearing from this area of British Columbia for the last forty years. Some of their bodies were never found. Vaughn is controlling. He won't let Hailey date, hold a job, or go out with her friends. When Hailey discovers Vaughn's secret, she decides that she would be safer on her own. With the help of her friend Jonny, Hailey takes refuge in an abandoned cabin in the mountains. When the townspeople hear that she has disappeared, they fear that she is yet another victim of the Highway Killer.

Beth Chevalier has dropped out of law school and come to Cold Creek to find the man who murdered her sister. Amber was the latest victim of the Highway Killer, her body found in a ravine only yards from the road. Lucky for Beth, her sister's old job as a waitress at Mason's diner is available. As Beth asks questions about her sister's murder, she quickly comes to the attention of the killer. Will she be the next victim?

Wow! I started reading this book yesterday and only put it down to get a few hours of sleep. I don't know why I did that since my mind was racing with all of the things going on in this book. Sleep was impossible. So, I picked the book back up and finished it. Who needs sleep anyway?

I don't want to give away too much of the story, so I'll stop here. Chevy Stevens is a new author for me. I'll definitely be checking out her backlist. I've seen other reviewers describe the book as chilling, creepy, haunting, and unsettling. They're all correct. I highly recommend this book. My review: 5 Stars.

I enjoyed a lot within this tale but it didn't quite have the tension that her books usually have. Still, it's wonderful to have another book after a long wait since the last release. A unique take on scary events. Wolf was a fun addition. I hope we have another book from Stevens sooner rather than later.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for the review copies of this mystery thriller.

I was intrigued from page one since a ghost/spirit narrates the prologue. Set in rural British Columbia, Canada, the novel was written to draw attention to real unsolved disappearances/murders of First Nation women in the area.

The novel features two main characters, Hailey and Beth, young women who have experienced great loss in their lives. Given their ages, this felt a bit YA at times. I didn't anticipate the 'outdoorsy" lifestyles of the characters, although I should have, given the setting. It was great to have a dog as an important character in the story!

I always appreciate audiobooks with multiple narrators when done well and enjoyed the performances of Isabella Star LaBlanc, Angela Dawe, and Brittany Pressley.

This was my first Chevy Stevens novel but it won't be the last.

Excellent book by Chevy Stevens. I have read all of her books and each one gets better and better. The characters are believable, have depth, and a purpose. This is about a serial killer of young women in a small town. I thought I had the killer figured out in the beginning, but later I figured it out. At the end of the book, there is a message from one of the girls that was killed. It brought tears to my eyes and made my heart ache. Great read!!
