Don't expect a wholesome flashback to the eighties when you crack the cover of Sarah Thyre's memoir. It is indeed - dark at the roots - full of the stuff many of us might remember thinking, feeling, doing but would never admit.
If you're a bit cynical, a bit off-center, you'll likely enjoy Thyre's retelling of her childhood drama (no wonder she ended up on stage). For those who came of age in the 80's there are priceless tidbits of our youth - her admission that everything she knew about periods came from Judy Blume - which will resonate.
Fans of Sedaris will find an apt student in these pages.

Honestly, this is one of the worst books I have read. I only finished it in the dire hope it would get much better. IMHO, I wouldn't waste your time or credit on this book. If it had been a library book, I would not have drudged on trying to read it from cover to cover. It would have been available for checkout quickly. I am happy to part with it, and move on through my TBR pile.

I liked this book. Not enough to keep it but enough to recommend it. It made me feel better about my own childhood. I didn't even realize until it arrived that "Dark at the Roots" might have an alternate meaning. In the spirit of honesty I felt that it ended a little abruptly, but I guess that is why people write sequels.
