This was a great book, with just the right amount of suspense. The concepts of the wise woman, herbalist, and Witch were well portrayed, as was the dark side, Hecate, and death. From a Witch's standpoint, I was glad to see all the details pertaining to the Craft were well researched and accurate. And though the concepts of a dark path, which really do exist, may tend to show the Craft in a bit of a negative light, at least the portrayal was accurate.

I have been working on this book for ages! At first I kept being interrupted, and then somehow I just kept interrupting myself. The first half of the book has a very slow, unpressing quality to it. I wanted to know what was going to happen but never seemed to be in any rush to get there, and neither did the book. In spite of the constant time lags I never forgot a bit of the story. Neither the writing nor the plot came off as particularly complex, but they still managed to impress themselves into my mind so that things were always fresh.
The second half of the book went much faster, and I finished it in one sitting. The ending wasn't surprising, but I was very interested in seeing it come about. There are a couple of little things I have yet to figure out but I don't want to give anything away!
And let me just say that Alex is my perfect nightmare of a husband. What Maggie ever saw in that man is entirely beyond me, and I don't know why any other woman would look twice either! Ugh! The author has a great talent for writing characters, because I can picture Alex perfectly, and I spent the entire course of the book wanting to throw rotten tomatoes at him from the audience. He's such an irritating, self-centered little prick -- there were scary women popping up through the woodwork at the children, but was I aiming my imaginary tomatoes at them? No, just Alex! :rolls eyes:
