Well written and it took some adjustement to reading the entire story in first person, but it felt more comfortable the farther I got into the book. Not a cut and dried story like the Highland stories, but rather the first part of a story journaled by Mac and how she got caught up in this crazy Tuatha de' Danaan that she didn't even know existed. Contains a few sexually explicit scenes with V'lane, though no sex actaully takes place.
I read this book on a recommendation from Evie. She loves this series and is a fever-freak, she especially loves Jericho. So, when she told me you could download the book as a podcast for free, I was all over that! The podcast is on itunes or you can check out the podcast at www.darkfeverpodcast.com This book is the beginning to her fever series. While there is a lot of information pumped into the story, it was one that I really enjoyed. I was not distracted with the book written in first person, but sometimes it was too detailed. I have a feeling Ms. Moning wanted it that way. She wants her reader to be really connected to Mac. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Bloodfever. Faefever was just released, with the fourth in the series not coming out until 2009. I am not sure when the last book will be out. I wish that there was more tension between Barrons and Mac, although I understand that KMM couldn't put too much between them in the first book, and (***LITTLE SPOILER***) the fingernail painting was absolutely adorable and I will just have to settle for that and when Barrons saves her butt in the warehouse. DONE SPOILING So, If you want something different and adventurous, I think you'll be pleased with this book!

Awesome book. One of my faves! MacKayla is a Sidhe-seer but she doesn't know it, and when she goes to Ireland to try & find answers about her sisters murder, she comes to meet many different "others" she previously had no idea exsisted & her whole life changes. Not alot of "romance" in this one, which I liked. Much more about the story and mystery. Kept me up all night reading! 5 stars!

Even though I wanted to like this book, because I've like others by this author, I just couldn't get into it. It starts out cheezy and just head downhill from there.
The first-person narrative is weak and the character, Mac, feels very unpolished yet still manages to come off as annoying and immature. I hate to use the term "dumb blond", but here it fits. She's whiny, spoiled and easily unlikeable.
The storyline makes me think the author was a bit inspired by Laurell K. Hamilton's Fae series, but that's as far as it goes. It also reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer because Mac comes across as a southern version of a Valley Girl.
I got to chapter 7 before I decided that I could no longer go on and had to call it quits. Mac is just TSTL, but will since this is a series, and I just can't punish myself by reading something this poorly written.

Wow! This is a great new series. I can't wait for Bloodfever! Ms Moning has written the best suspense I have read in years. I can usually figure out what is going to happen next, but not this time.

This is a very different book than the usual Moning story. I didn't think I was going to like it during the first few pages. Turned out to be a very catching story.

Personally, I'm a romance fan. When I learned this was not a romance novel, I put off reading it for months. I'm glad I finally did. I really enjoyed this book. Mac has traveled to Dublin to try and solve the murder of her sister. Once she is there, she learns a great deal about her sister and herself. She also learns that a war is coming between man and the Fae and that she is powerful weapon within that war.

Mysterious, a little complicated, definitely sexy. Lots of paranormal. Didn't end the way I thought it would...I didn't hate it, but I doubt that I'll read the rest of the series.

Not a typical romance. But definately leading to one. Great story if you love Fae and details.

Read it - read it now! But be sure to have Bloodfever close by because you will be ready to begin book 2 as soon as you turn the last DF page. Karen Moning is a fabulous writer who has brought to life an entire world complete with a set of good/bad guys (part of the fun is deciding which is which!), sexy hunks, beautiful locations, lust and despair. There is immenient danger with the promise of redemption. Darkfever is just the tip of the iceburg, these characters come to life and "grip" you. Promise yourself you will read long enough to find out why Mac doesn't eat french fries anymore.....

Moning at her contemporary best... Do you believe in monsters, fairies, and objects of unfathomable power? Would you be willing to brave the depths of depravity and evil only written about in ancient texts to avenge the murder of your beloved older sister? Would you be able to walk away and "forget" the world you had unwittingly stumbled into when it became evident that your fate could become identical to your murdered and mutilated sister? What is real and who is truly "evil" and to be feared? Can anyone be trusted? MacKayla goes to Dublin, Ireland, for some answers about her sister's murder and finds a world she never knew existed...

Back of Book Description:
My name is Mackayla, Mac for short. I'm a sidhe-seer, one who sees the Fae, a fact I accepted only recently and very reluctantly.
My philosophy is pretty simple--any day nobody's trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven't had many good days lately. Not since the walls between Man and Fae came down. But then, there's not a sidhe-seer alive who's had a good day since then.
When Mackayla's sister was murdered, she left a single clue to her death--a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone. Journeying to Ireland in search of answers, Mac is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to master a power she had no idea she possessed--a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae...
As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho...while at the same time, the ruthless V'lane--an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women--closes in on her. As the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac's true mission becomes clear: to find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book--because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of both worlds in their hands...

My Review:
I thought this was a very interesting book, though for some odd reason it took me a while to get into. I personally felt the last 100 pages were the best. I loved how you aren't sure whether or not to trust Barrons while you slowly watch Mac fall for him, though I also enjoyed how not a romance this book truly was. The fact that it's in first person doesn't bother me at all.
One thing that did bother me a bit was that the author foreshadowed all throughout the book. But when whatever had been foreshadowed would come along it sometimes didn't live up to the hype. That was the only thing keeping this from an A+ book.
I can't wait to read the next one.

I'm not usually a fan of books told in the first person but I really liked Mac so this wasn't such a hardship to read. Every time i read the phrase later I would learn or in the future I would know it bothers me. I'm not sure why it annoyed me so much but it did. The story itself is really exciting and I cant wait to see whats up next.

So glad i started this one. Mac is a great character. Her life is thrown into turmoil upon the brutal murder of her sister. Not content to just let things lie, she flies to Ireland to further investigate her sisters death. Upon her arrival she finds out that things aren't what they seem and everything she had ever believed about her life is a lie. This first book is really about her adjustment to her new life. Although she can see what her new reality is, she is fighting with her past reality because it was safe and warm and loving. Jericho Barrons is someone whom she cannot truly trust, but at least she knows that he will have her back because he needs her special gift. The book is written in the first person and I enjoyed Mac's perspective on the changes going on in her life.

COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!!! Great read. This is the first in the Fever series and you can tell this book is laying the ground work down for something bigger. I was afraid i would get lost with the vocabulary but it was so well written I followed along well. Any fan of the Sookie stackhouse novels would appreacite this series. It has a very similar basis especially with refernces to 'spidey sense', and 'I'm just a bartender'...etc. While there lacks any romantic or sexual involvement there is plenty of tension between Mac & Jericho. And some short scenes with very descriptive sexual content with a fae. I can't wait to jump int othe next book!

LOVED IT!! I have read her "Highlander" series and REALLY LOVED them. I loved Mac. (I know I am using "LOVED" too many times but it fits.) I found myself smiling and then giggling out loud a few times. The story draws you in and keeps you there until the very end when you go, "Nooooooooo, not the end!!!" Waiting IMPATIENTLY for the next book in this series.

This book was amazing! I am an avid Moning fan. I started with her highland series and really enjoyed them. When I learned she was expanding her story in the Highland series to her Fever series, I was impatient to read them all. However, I read countless reviews stating she wasn't a romance writer anymore and that the new series is nothing like her previous work. I was severely disappointed since some of my favorite writers have switched genres right when they seem to be at the top of their game. I decided I'd read the series eventually and assumed it would probably take me weeks to read since it lacked romance.
I assumed wrong. It took me a day in a half to finish the book. This is the best piece of literature Moning has produced. I really enjoyed her Highland series but her subplot on the Tuatha De Danna was always muddled and not quite clear. It seems Moning has honed in on her skills as a writer and has given her creative idea of the Fae justice.
It does not lack romance either. I think her fans that were disappointed in her Fever series were expecting something similar to her Highland series. The two series are very different. "Darkfever" is much more serious. But if your expecting to find a few sex scenes in this book you will be disappointed to learn there aren't any. Don't let that discourage you, there is still a lot of sexual tension among the characters.
I am so glad I finally read this book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

This book is the first in a wonderful series of 5 books about Mackayla Lane. This first book sets up the series very well, and sure encourages you along to read the next and the next! It is written in the first person, which I loved. Mac is telling her own story, and I feel very connected to her. The character of Jericho Barrons is full of intrigue. The relationship that develops is certainly one that makes me want to keep reading.
This story is interesting, entertaining, and is very hard to put down for more than a few minutes. It is completely enjoyable.

The more I read paranormal romance the more I realize how hard it is to write a good series. And Darkfever is a very promising start to a fantastic one. This first book was basically about laying the groundwork for the future installments. The pacing was solid and consistent albeit a tad slow at times. I think there could have been more action and definitely more romance. The main character Mackayla Lane reminded me so much of Sookie Stackhouse that I'm sure it is not a coincidence. (A pretty, buxom, blonde, tanned, bartender...from the south. I hope Ms. Moning will give her more distinguishing qualities so I can separate them) I also had a bit of a gripe that the author took the easy way out by saying "I'll spare you the details" on this or that when explicit explanations and descriptions were warranted. Otherwise I liked the concept, the world and the characters and am currently awaiting the next book from paperbackswap.com

different than the rest of Moning's books, but well worth the read. I just finished the 4th book in the series a week ago.
I disliked the heroine in this book. she was annoying. But throughout the series, you watch her grow up and change as she faces many trials. She transforms into a strong, independent woman.
the whole series is a mystery! you are left w/ many questions! (and thank goodness there is a message board on the author's website where you can speculate the answers to these questions w/ readers!!!)
but I have never been involved with fictional characters at this level. KMM will hook you to this series. And you will just LOVE the heros and heroines.
the only bad thing is the wait for each book (you left on some SERIOUS cliff-hangers for a year!) good news for you??? if you're just starting this series, there is only one book left. and it's coming out sometime next year.
even if you don't like the genre (mystery/thriller/paranomal/urban fantasty) you'll love this series!! this wld be your one exception. it's a great book to escape into, yet you walk away w/ things for your mind to chew on.
it's amazing and a MUST READ! don't wish for it...many wont post it. Go out and by it! NOW
Moning's books have layers, are complex, somewhat heavy and well-researched books! you will love her style, skill, and wit!
also, her books are in audio format! Phil G does Moning's highlander series and the 4th book in the Fever series (with Natalie). His voice is orgasmic! But you'll love the 4th book's audio (Dreamfever) w/ all the sound effects and the two narrotors and the music!!!
(also, from her highlander series, you have cross over characters and more info into the Fever world)

Loved this book! I had never read Karen Moning before so I did not know what to expect. Right away I liked the mix of characters..... how you cannot tell who is bad, who is good, every one has their own agenda for helping or not helping Mac as she suddenly finds herself thrust in chaos. I have read the first three books in the series and the story gets better and better. I can't wait for Dreamfever...... it is the only one I haven't read yet. When the fever series is complete I think I will try Karen Moning's other series (Highlander), if the writing is as good as the fever series I am sure I will love it.

This is an excellent, spellbinding book about the dark forces of the Fae world invading the earth through portals in Ireland. MacKayla Lane goes to Ireland after her sister is murdered to find her killer. What she finds there is magical and horrifying.
This is an excellent book. I'm looking forward to reading the second installement in the series.

I was a little nervous about the opening but it was a good book. Told in a down to earth manner yet was about a strange subject. I am now looking forward to reading the second book.
This was my first "Grown Up" Fae book, and I loved it. I found Mac really annoying at first, but as the story goes on she becomes a great character.I'm very grateful that I have the entire series on hand. Normally I try to space a series out with a few random books in between, but I NEED to know what happens next.
This was a fantastic start to a series of five books. I enjoyed it so much that I hunted down the other four and devoured them all within a few days. Wonderful alternative history/urban fantasy, with Faeries to boot!
I enjoyed this book, the mysterious Barrons and the maturing Mac. I have to read the next in the series because the end just leaves you hanging on a cliff, good thing its available.
~Update~ This book read a bit slow for me so I wasnt too sure about the next one, BUT I LOVE this series! I think the characters are mysterious enough to keep you coming back for more and the whole Fairy/Fae aspect is extremely interesting. I also like the fact that the writing style is awesome and its not like every other book!! If you are iffy about this one, you MUST keep reading for you will be hooked!!! :)

Very good book. Will never think of fairies the same way. Mac is a great heroine, not perfect but who is. I enjoy books in the first person so that did not bother me at all.
Good story. kept me riveted. Can't wait for the next in the series
I loved this book ..Mac Kayla goes to Ireland to solve her sisters death. But while she is there ,she finds things out about herself. One thing I will admit was the monsters weren't my ideal version of scary. BUT all in all the story was good. I am on the second an will be finishing it all. Highly recommend it
WOW!! this is a great book. I Love it! At first I was kind of iffy but I stuck with it because I was on a Anita Blake Withdrawl LOL (the same thing happened with Anita Blake when I was on my Riley Jensen withdrawl LOL). I am so very glad I gave it a chance. I am loving it and can't wait to get all the books in the series. I am on book two so I should have it done in two more days but it is interesting, compelling, and intriguing! If you are not sure if you should try it or not, I really think you won't be sorry. It's a great book...thanks Karen
have caught the fever and spreading it to my friends. love it. the book was in awesome condition.
great book, couldn't put it down! MacKayla is such a riveting character and I always wanted to know what was happening next and who others in the story really were! BloodFever was also excellent, now I'm reading FaeFever:) and looking for the last two books in this series!
i loved loved loved this book read the whole thing in a day and was so glad that I have book 2 of the series on my bookshelf already to start reading tomorrow! Im in love with Mac and can't wait to see whats in store for her and Barrons in the next books! YAH!
I was skeptical of this series as I started it...but I'm not sure why or how anyone could have any skepticism over such a series because it is PHENOMENAL!!! By far the absolute BEST series I have ever set my eyes on. EVERYONE needs to enjoy this series for themselves!
The plot of the book is good and I enjoyed it, good fantasy content. But the main character is the absolute worst. She is not deliberately made to be villainous, sometimes characters like that can be likeable in their own way. The character Jericho was made to be likeable in that he is a jerk. But not Mac.
But no, this character is just an insult to intelligence. Not a single chapter goes by without you being slapped in the face with "hey reader, remember that she is a Southerner! Georgia peach! Remember that she likes pink but isn't girly! She likes isn't like the other girls!!!" I could get over this flaw if it was only the first two or three chapters where the author is establishing her character, but it is persistent throughout the entire book. It is grating and while I would want to find out what happens through the series, I can't fathom reading the same derivative thing over and over through the rest of the books.

This was a great book! I am in love with the Twilight series and was looking for something to read after it and found this to be just as captivating. It's a great sci fi/fantasy story and each book in this series of 4 gets better and better. The author weaves a fascinating world of "fae" or fairies that is nothing like (as she calls them) Tinkerbells. It's well written with some funny parts. Has some sexual parts, so not good for teens, but still a great read. I recommend this book and series for those looking for something good to read.
interesting storyline with likable characters and part of a series
This book sets up a new series. Lots of buildup, but not much actually happening between the H/H.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!! Dark Fever is a 5+ star read, and its not often that a book ranks that high on my list. Its beautifully written, has a captivating flow and brilliantly flawed, relatable characters. Karen Marie Moning has been one of my favorite since the first of her Highlander series (which also ranks very high on the list; if youre looking for sexy, rugged heroes, the books in this series are just the thing.) But the Fever series has a totally different feel to it than her Highlander series, in a good way. Theres something down and dirty about Dark Fever. Its in the characters and the settings; everyones lying and hiding stuff, and Mac cant trust anyone. And the world shes been thrust into is one thats so seamlessly woven into our own that it makes the things she encounters more believable and more unfathomable. Mac is stumbling around trying to get her barring, and shes totally taken the readers along for the same ride.
Okay, I have to stop right now and say that this is the second time Ive read this book. Normally, I dont re-read books; I remember them and am not amused with stories that I already know. But I read Dark Fever right after it came out, and at the time it wasnt the kind of book I was looking for. I liked it well enoughits in my reading list with 5 stars, but it just didnt stick out. I dont remember what made me decide to give the series another try, but Im sure glad I did. The book is exactly what my now-self is looking for.
Part of the reason I love the book is how its written. In the first person, from a future perspective. Most of the book keeps you in the story, but a couple of times, Mac will pan out and foreshadow something, and thats a great twist. Its also hard to write. I have a hard time with first person, so I admire Moning that much more.
Now, on to the characters. Mac is Well, interesting. We know shes a virtual Barbie, or at least she was before her sisters murder. Its a good thing Moning didnt spend any time dwelling on Macs former self because if she had, I doubt I would have finished. Instead, were thrown right into the action and emotion, much like it must have felt for Mac when she found out about Alina. Mac also has great character development. For her to drop everything and go overseas like she does, all alone, shes either very brave or just plain naïve. Even she labels her actions as a mix of nativity and stubbornness. Jericho Barrons is Well, fascinating. All I remember about Barrons from my first read is that hes distant. An alpha male definitely, but one detached from the world and from Mac. This round I see so much more. Hes still an alpha male, but hes got a strong, complex character that weve only just seen the tip of. (Hehe, no pun intended.) Not to mention the secondary characters, who are also really cool and help build the background and scene.

This book was amazing! I highly encourage reading the rest of the series, also!
This isn't one of my favorite books but a friend insisted I read it so I did. I like the character and story but I don't like the vulgar way some things are written. The story of McKayla and her sister is interesting. I've read this and the second book Bloodfever and still have more questions than I like to have when finishing a book.
Not bad, not bad at all!
Originally wasn't sure about this one because of the compulsion Charlotte was under. I needn't have worried. I thought Charlotte a strong, capable character and a good match for Kieran. I like that while each book is about different couples getting their HEAs, there is also an underlying story line that ties all the books together (in this case ultimately freeing the fae trapped in Piefferburg). And boy, with that story line, things are heating up. There is a bit of a cliff hanger ending, book 4 had better wrap everything up.
So, if by some happenstance you are not aware that this book isn't really a romance, let me enlighten you. It's marketed as a romance and the author normally writes romance--but just because it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck does not mean it is a duck. Having said that, I can now talk about what an awesomely entertaining piece of fantasy this was.
Mac travels to Ireland in search of her dead sister's killer. She starts to see some very bizarre and unexplainable things. On her quest she stumbled across Jericho Barrons, wealthy and very unlikely ally, who explains to her that what she is seeing are the Fae--some sort of alien? alternate dimension?--group of magical beings that have recently begun to spill from their own world into the human world. Mac starts to believe that the Fae had a hand in her sisters untimely death, and wonders if she is next.
If we view this as a fantasy, we have to admit that style-wise it's pretty typical. Girl who's lived normal life encounters not normal things--right. But Moning does it with a certain grace and humor that keeps it from getting overly predictable. The use of mythology is intensely interesting. In addition, I found Mac to be not only likable but easy to relate to--if at times somewhat irritating.
There is a lot of exposition in this book, typical of any first in a series. It can get a bit dull--although in my opinion the dull points were blessedly brief.
I have mixed feelings about the first person telling of the story. In a lot of ways it works for this particular story because you can get right into Mac's head. But overall I file it as a negative because it can be maddeningly frustrating and contributes to the aforementioned dullness.
And yes, one does need to be aware that this is one of the least romantic books you'll see on the romance shelf. But in the end, it is a wonderfully entertaining and fun read, obviously setting up for an epic adventure of a series.

MacKayla Lane received a life changing call one afternoon telling her that her sister was murdered in Dublin. Weeks go by and Mac's family was notified that the case had no leads and was being sent to a different division (i.e. the filing cabinet). Mac decides to head to Dublin to put pressure on the police and in doing so is thrown into a whole new world, one she thought only existed in horror stories and fairy tales.
MacKayla learns that she is a sidhe-seer and can see Fae. She can also sense Fae Objects of Power (OOPS for short). A mysterious man, named Jericho Barrons, gives her a safe place to live and a job, but she must help him with finding what she seeks also, the Sinsar Dubh - a powerful book created by the Unseelie King that is said to describe the making of the fae. In their search, Mac comes against many foes and learns a bit about herself.
I really enjoyed this book and it has become one of my favorite series. Mac transforms from this colorful, Southern girl that's STSL, to someone who is not all sunshine and rainbows. She is on a mission to find her sister's killer and nothing will stop her.

Didn't really care for this book. I didn't like the heroine and you never really got to know anything about the hero. It is the first in a series I guess, so I will have to wait and see about the rest, but this one was very disappointing.
This was very disappointing. Highly recommended. I thought I was missing out on something great, and it was irritatingly mediocre. I was totally done with the immature heroine and I was so done with reading Barons say Ms. Lane every other word in his sentences. 255 pages of listening to the heroine's drivel and searching for clues that are never found. Nothing moved in this book at all and I lost interest completely by the end.
I had heard about this series from my sister forever. I finally got a copy of the first book, Darkfever, and began it. It is a great read.
This is the first book in one of my favorite urban fantasy series. After a cryptic voice mail message from her older sister, Mackayla Lane goes to Ireland and in the process discovers that she and her sister aren't entirely what they seem. A great start to a new urban fantasy suspense series about humans and fae. Really enjoyed the story. Read it over two days. I was captivated from the first page and the ending left me wanting to continue with the series. There are some very sexually charged moments, but no actual sex and no romance although it's hinted there's romance to come. It didn't bother me that the story is told in first person although there were times I wished I could know what the mysterious Jericho Barrons was thinking.
I started this book on a thursday and by sunday - I had read the first 3 books in the series. The story blends action, back story and celtic myths and history in a well paced and planned story. The action was nonstop and once the book was over, I needed to start the next and the next to know what happens. Mac is a great character that grows throughout the series - Her male protagonists are great (I want to know more about the mysterious Jericho Barrons and the fae prince, V'Lane). I have to get my hands on the next one ASAP. I highly recommend this series, you won't be able to put it down.
This series is addictive! I'm having a hard time waiting for the next book!
I picked up this book by mere chance in a hospital gift shop and was immediately drawn into the interesting and unique story and writing style of Moning. Tried a book from her other series but while it was well-written I prefer the strenght and grit of her Fever series heroine Mac.
For my first book of this kind - other worlds and gifted humans - I was impressed! It was a fast moving book and kept me interested...in fact I picked it up every chance I had today and just finished it!! I think I'll finish the series - I wanna know what happens to Mac and Jericho....and the Fae! A great, tantalizing read - 5 stars, and without hesitation!
This series took me a bit to get into. I read the first one, and was content to leave it alone for awhile. Then I happened upon another in the series, and that started me wondering what I was missing, so I continued on to the second, third, and the fourth. I am so immersed in this story now, that I was cursing the author when I ran out of published books to read ;) I am currently waiting for the next installment to drop.
But in particular about Book one, it is definitely something different. I read a lot of paranormal books, and this had a totally unique flavor. You have the story of revenge, the "I am woman and WILL get stronger" theme, and a hint of romance, all wrapped up in the "american tourist in europe" feel. As I said, it didn't catch me right away with book one, but a kernel did remain in my brain to prod me on months later to keep going. I'm glad I did cause the story continues to grow and blossom into untold depths.
I'm not only keeping my copy, I'm lending it to friends.

Fun book. Not my first choice in genre;;;but I may be getting hooked. What fun! Try it, you may like it:)
From all the recent hype, I was expecting a great book but I'll have to admit I was somewhat disappointed. Yes, the character development is great, although I was a little overwhelmed at first with the number of characters introduced, but the author does provide a glossary in the form of "Mac's Journal" to help keep characters straight. The storyline was entertaining, and even kept me up late a couple of nights, but one of the tags for this book is romance and KMM is known for her romances so I expected a lot more in that department. There were a couple of sex scenes and I can sense a growing attraction between Mac and Barrons but I'm hoping that due to the number of characters introduced and the history with each, there was simply no "time" to introduce a romance in this book. However, I am intrigued enough to continue with the series and look forward to seeing where the characters and story go.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down once I'd started it. If you start this book and decide you like it, I'd suggest getting your hands on the remainder of the series because you'll be wanting to read them all.
This is the first book in the five book Fever series by Moning. The fifth book "Shadowfever" is scheduled to release in January of 2011. I enjoyed this first book in the series, although you can tell the purpose of this book is mainly to introduce us to Mac and the world she's been thrust in to.
MacKayla Lane, Mac to her friends, is your typical southern belle Barbie-doll type. She loves shopping, scoping out hot guys, and dressing in pink. Then she finds out that her sister, who is studying abroad in Dublin, has been brutally murdered. With the Dublin police poised to set aside the case for lack of evidence, Mac decides to travel out to Dublin and do some investigating of her own. She finds out that she barely knew what her sister was really up to in Dublin; her sister had gotten involved something dark and deadly. Now Mac is being drawn into the darkness too. Mac finds out she is a Null, a very rare type of Fae Seer....and unfortunately Fae don't like Nulls. Now with most of paranormal Dublin out to kill her Mac will need the assistance of the dark and dangerous Jericho Barrons if she is going to survive long enough to hunt down her sister's killer. So good-bye pink high heels and hello black sneakers...Mac's got some Fae to kill.
If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer you will enjoy this book. It really has that same type of vibe going on; pretty blond fashion obsessed girl finds out that she is destined to fight evil dark bad things. Mac comes off as a bit ditsy, fluffy, and naive in the beginning on the book; but as the story continues we start to see a tough core of bravery and stubbornness. Barron is everything you could hope for in a hero; tough, complex, mysterious, seriously bad-ass, and of course gorgeous.
Moning does a great job of writing a well-rounded novel. The surrounding descriptions are very good, so you can easily picture the surroundings. The characters are complex and interesting, with many shades of grey to their personalities. The action scenes are well done too. Of course, time is taken to describe Mac's colorful outfits, which soothes the fashionista in me. The world-building is creative, fantastic, and very engaging. There is definitely some dark humor throughout the book, which lightens things up and keeps them from getting too dark.
The story was hard to put down and made for a quick read. There is a lot of mystery to be solved and this mystery really keeps you turning pages. This book does wrap up the main storyline of Mac finding her sister's killer, but it doesn't resolve it. In fact you are left with a pretty big cliffhanger. I think if I had read this book when it was first released I would be pissed at how the story ends. Luckily I have the next three books already, so I don't have to wait to continue the story. My recommendation would be to buy the second book with the first one so that you don't have to wait to find out what happens.
I was a bit leery about reading a series of books written by a prominent romance author. I shouldn't have worried though...this book is not a romance it is a great dark urban fantasy. All in all it is a pretty dark story with lots of creepy gross evil Fae. It is definitely a read for a mature audience; there are a couple almost rape scenes and some sexual situations as well as quite a bit of swearing.
Overall I thought this was a strong urban fantasy and I really enjoyed it. It didn't absolutely blow me away, like Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniels series did or Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series did, but it was engaging and interesting. This book was very much an introduction book and I have a feeling that the story will grow in complexity and interest with the next book in the series, Bloodfever.

This is a FABULOUS Series!!! I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in Urban Fantasy...what a cool concept and highly original premise. You don't want to miss it. A new awesome series...what else could I ask for?
Excellent read! Ordered the second and third book in the series off-line the next day!
Great series! Love the author's Highlander Series as well.

First time reading one of Moning's books! Had no idea she was a romance novelist! This book had so much more plot and suspence then those "kissy" books! Ha! I couldn't put this book down! I almost threw the book across the room when the end was not really the end and had to purchase the 2nd book because I'm too impatient to wait for a copy on PaperBackSwap! Do yourself a favor and start ordering the rest of the series now!
I loved it. But then I love everything Ms. Moning writes. This isn't my usual type of book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The dynamic between Ms. Lane and Barrons is very special.
I really liked this book. She didn't get all caught up in sex scenes.
I prefer this series than the Highland for Karen Moning. Although there are a few story lines that are not tidily taken care of by the end of the book, to keep you interested in the next book, I don't mind. I hope the main female character wises up and isn't such a ditz in the nect book, which I'm currently eagerly reading.
I loved this book! I can't wait for the next one in the series.
this is a wonderful resource to help parents learn a gentle attachment style of parenting that produces loving caring adults.
I am undecided on this book. It isn't her Highlander series, and I didn't expect it to be. I have read other sci-fi/fantasy and up against them, it fall flat... (Early (before she got really bizarre) Laurell K Hamilton's "Anita Blake," and Michelle Sagara's "Choronicles of Elantra" of being most prominent but it was better than Lori Handeland's "Phoenix Chronicles" ).) I think I just kept waiting for the story to find resolution and it didn't really. I am glad that Mac found her strength and confidence at the end, b/c personally, I don't like weak women leads in books.
That said, I have the next two and will read them. Usually the first in a series is the least interesting to me b/c there is so much groundwork to lay, and I DO believe that Ms. Moning is a talented storyteller, so I have hopes for the next one.
Update: I am halfway thru book 3 and I am HOOKED. A bit of advice: If you like book 1 at all, get the remaining books BEFORE you read them. You will be happy that you did.

This is not Karen's normal style of a romance novel. If you are intrested in reading about the war between Fae and human starting this is the book to read.
this book keeps you wanting more
I Loved, Loved, Loved this book! Karen Marie Moning just became my newest favorite author. And to be completely honest I have no idea why; her heroine is everything I hate, too young, too impulsive, and way too entitled for absolutely no reason. BUT the storyline is awesome and IMHO over-the-top creative; so I got sucked into the plot, despite of my prejudices.
For creativity and flat out innovative settings you cant find a better place to get lost in than the world Karen has created for this one of a kind paranormal saga. Its a shame there are only 5 books in this outstanding series. My advise? If you love paranormal fiction, grab a copy of Darkfever as soon as you can. Start at the beginning because it moves fast, this is a series that must be savored from the beginning.

This book is a departure from the style of writing that I have been reading but, I enjoyed it. I liked the first person narrative and liked that it was told from a backward looking prospective of Mac telling her story.
I was somewhat under the impression that it was a paranormal romance maybe that was just my mistake. There was however no romance and I was a little disappointed because Jericho Berrons definately makes me think romance.
It was well written and intriging it kept me entertained and turning pages. I will say that the classes of the light/dark seelie/unseelie could possibly be confusing but, I have also read Laurell K. Hamilton's Fae series which uses the same mythology and was familar with it so I'm not sure if someone who wasn't would want more background or if it would be unimportant. Good action, could be considered a paranormal coming of age story.

fast moving w/lots of action
Beginning a new series with a new author is always a gamble, the MacKaylaa Lane series is worth the risk! I was pulled into the story from book one!
I gave it the ole college try, but couldn't get past the halfway point, Barron's attitutde toward "Ms. Lane" just got to me, among other things, plus, I just dislike first person (very few can I get through) all her "my perfect long blonde hair" and "no way my body could be confused with a kids" oye!!!anyway, this book will be much better sitting on someone elses to read pile!!!
Do the whole "fever" series .. well worth the time investment.
When I started reading this book, I have to say I was confused but as the story progressed, I was hooked. I would say it had a little bit of everything. It had mystery, intrigue, sadness, dangerous attractions and excitement. I really enjoyed this book.
Another great series with the Fae. A good beginning that explains everything. Can't wait for next one.
oh my can't wait for the next book.
I LOVE this series - very different from Ms. Moning's Highland series which follow the classic romance model. These books do not but I thought they were great and worth multiple reads!

My name is MacKayla, Mac for short. I'm a sidhe-seer, one who sees the Fae, a fact that I accepted only recently and very reluctantly. My philosophy is pretty simple--any day nobody's trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven't had many good days lately. Not since the walls between Man and Fae came down. But then, there's not a sidhe-seer alive who's had a good day since then. When MacKayla's sister was murdered, she left a single clue to her death--a crytic message on Mac's cell phone. Journeying to Ireland in search of answers, Mac is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to master a power she had no idea she possessed--a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae. As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho...while at the same time, the ruthless V'lane--an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women, closes in on her.
