I read this book back in July of 2005, long before the tv series began. I was mesmerized by it. The idea of a serial killer whose victims are serial killers, intrigued me. The fact that Dexter works for the Miami-Dade police dept. was a bonus because Miami is my home town. I found the author's descriptions of Miami to be accurate and and gave me a creepy feeling since so many of the places he mentions are very familiar to me. I see that I had written in my notes about the book that, "others will surely follow," but I could never have imagined that a tv series would follow! The books are very graphic and gory. Much more so than the shows. You have to be ready to be shocked when you read them. As for this title, I highly recommend it for those who can handle the strong stuff. The second book, "Dearly Devoted Dexter" is even more so. Jeff Lindsay writes with a bang!

I'm not so sure about this one....I LOVE the Showtime series based on these books. The 1st season of the show followed this book pretty close, but I have to say I think the show is better. That happens rarely but the show gives a lot more depth to the character(s) than the book does. I think if you have not seen the show you should give the book a chance. Its a whole different idea than anything I've come across before.
