The setting is an alternative universe, where the Seattle area is run by humans and Paladins. The Paladins are immortal warriors. Through a corridor, another land exists. The only light there is from blue stones that are being sold in the upper regions. The inhabitants of this area are called the Other. One Other warrior, Barak, runs away from his dark land to live in the upper region. He is captured by Paladins who let him live mainly because of a doctor's, Laurel's, care for him and desire to keep him alive. The chief of the Paladins is Laurel's lover and he can't deny her request. Barak ends up working on a geological project with Lacey who heads this project. They fall in love but after awhile, Barak wants nothing to do with her since she won't acknowledge her relationship with him to those around her. Everything comes to a head with the volcanoes activities. Very good read; good characterizations as well as plot. The only problem that bugged me was wondering why the blue stones were so valuable to those in the land of Paladins.

A very good read.
Once a warrior for the Others, Barak q'Young is caught between two worlds -- exiled from his homeland, and a pariah among his enemies, the Paladins. While hunting a betrayer who's selling the precious blue gems that light the Others' world, Barak must aid geologist Lacey Sebastian in her research for the Paladins. Barak is instantly drawn to the fiery, beautiful woman, but Lacey initially despises the enemy intruder. Soon she sees beyond the violent past, though, finding the dark warrior intriguing -- and extremely sexy. Though neither can resist the passion that blazes between them, Barak is torn between loyalties, hiding a secret gift that could prove useful to Lacey's research, at the sacrifice of his own people. But when Lacey is kidnapped and held hostage, Barak realizes he will do anything to save her...even risk his own life.

A engaging, stay up and read it in one night book. As a fan of the series I was a little hesitant about going off into the 'others' but I was not dissapointed.

There is nothing more appealing to me than a super hot warrior, with a heart of gold. I can't wait to read the next one!

I very much enjoy this series of books. I also liked the author delving more into the "Others" society, bringing more clarity to the total picture and expanding the realms into something more needy and personal. I also very much like the feminine heroin being femaile myself (ha ha ha). I like the world created by Alexis Morgan very much. . . there is much more to the universe than just us humans and it is so much fun to explore the possibilities through her eyes.
