This Star Wars adventure is set in the ancient days of the Old Republic. The Sith flourish during this time and have formed a Dark Brotherhood to take over the galaxy and destroy the Jedi. The Jedi form an Army of Light, led by Lord Hoth, to stop the Sith menace once and for all. The two armies collide on a backwater world and total Armageddon breaks out.
Into this comes Darth Bane. Born and raised on a mining colony and treated like dirt, the young man is taken under the wing of the Sith. While fighting in their armies, they learn of his raw talent in the Force. He is taken to their academy and trained in the ways of the Dark Side. While there, Bane learns while studying in the ancient archives that the Sith have become weak and are on their way to destruction. Will it be he that leads them there?
This is one of the best sci-fi novels I've read in a long time! Mr. Karpyshyn is responsible for the video game stories of the Knights of the Old Republic, so he knows this era like the back of his hand. Even if you're not a fan of the Star Wars movies, you can enjoy this one! You don't have to know all of the backstory and trivia of the series to follow this novel, since it predates the movie stories by millenia.
The story itself is great and ominous. It's like the Darth Vader story in reverse. We get to see the Sith making the mistake of underestimating one of their own, rather than the Jedi in the movies. There are parallels to the new trilogy in this one, but the story stands on it's own. A truly wonderful read for Star Wars buffs and general space opera fans alike.

This book was awesome! I had not read a Star Wars novel for several years and I missed them so I picked this up and was not disappointed! Darth Bane is the prophesied one who breaks the Sith in order to rebuild them back to their former glory. Plenty of Sith philosophy and action.
