Very good....tinges of evil made it hard to keep going at times, but as the mom of two little girls, that's to be expected with a book that deals with violence against little girls. Still a good read, and the ending had my jaw dropped.

This is the first book I've read by Lisa Gardner. I loved it! She knows how to create a main character that is really likable, and I found myself rooting for her in the end. Great book with lots of surprises.

This book is losely tied to the Quincy family books that Lisa Gardner has made so popular. Pierce Quincy does make a very brief appearance but over all this is a standalone book and a very good one at that. The suspense is terrific. It hooks you within the first few pages and makes you want to stay up all night to finish it. Although this is one of Gardner's earlier books it doesn't suffer with a new writer feel to it. It made a fan of Gardner out of me.

"Professional event planner Melanie Stokes does not suspect that the death of a serial killer in a Texas electric chair 20 years before could have any relevance to her neatly ordered existence. But as it becomes clear that the life she's known (as the adopted daughter of Boston cardiologist Harper Stokes and his trophy wife, Patricia) is based on ugly secrets and bloody lies, her world unravels. With the help of FBI Agent David Riggs, who makes up for his lack of physical agilityAthe result of ankylosing spondylitis (bad back problems)Awith finely honed reflexes, street smarts and pure sex appeal, Melanie unearths what an intricately planned 25-year-old cover-up can't hide: the gruesome truth about her parentage."

I've not read a true suspense story in a while and I was so glad I took a break from my usual diet of vampires, witches, and demons. I had forgotten how edge of the seat scary a true suspense can be. I had forgotten that the suspense building in a real thriller can raise the hairs on your arms as effectively as the horror of a vampire suddenly appearing or a werewolf attacking. While there were a few points that I didn't feel that Gardener explained to my satisfaction, this book kept your attention and kept you guessing right up to the end. A half a dozen times, I was sure that I had it figured out but Gardener managed to plant the clues and kept me turning pages and peeling layers of this mystery, long after I should have gone to bed. I throughly enjoyed the trip and will drag out another of her books as the thrill ride was refreshing and mind clearing.

Melanie Stokes was adopted by the Stokes family at the age of nine, when she was discovered in the emergency room abandoned by her parents and suffering amnesia. She grows up in the family loved by her parents and brother ~~ till a Texan reporter contacts her to share with her the mystery of her past...secrets her family has been keeping from her for 20 ears.
If you're in the mood for mind games, this book is it. It is much more of a psychological thriller with a couple of murders thrown in it to keep the suspense alive. And the ending is unpredictable

Bigger stretch of the imagination than the others of hers that I've read. Even so, the characters are nicely touched with foibles and/or failings that make them feel as if you might have met them at one time or another in your way through the world. Moves along at a nice clip with enough loose ends to keep you turning the pages.

Melanie had lost all memory of her life before the adoption, and now someone wants to give it back. Even if it includes the darkest nightmare the Stokes family ever faced: the murder of their first daughter in Texas. As Melanie pursues every lead, chases every shadow in the search for her real identity, two seemingly unrelated events from twenty years ago will come together in a dangerous explosion of truth. And with her very life at stake, Melanie will fear that the family she loves the most may be the people she should trust the least.
