I found this book a bit too academic. The author obviously did exhaustive research and it seems like he read, then quoted in this book, every reference ever made about anything that ever happened in the hours of darkness. I enjoyed the book, but it seemed like the author could have synopsized a bit more. I discovered this book while watching a documentary (possibly on the History Channel) about this very topic. The author was featured in the documentary, and it covered most of the same information in a visual, engaging form. I recommend that documentary of you are interested in the topic but aren't sure the book is for you.
