A wonderful storyline that has you crying, smiling(albeit somewhat sadly) and feeling wistful. Mr Martin has a very distinctive style of writing that captures the attitudes and speech of the South and small town living perfectly. He writes with a style that can be heart-rendingly stark one moment and lushly beautiful in another. His characters come to life on the pages and you find yourself wanting the book not to end.

Wonderful story of love and Christian renewal. The title kind of discouraged me a little from reading this book. It is about a husband whose struggling because his wife has become unexpectedly ill (in a coma). He is struggling with his faith and with his ability to figure out how to live his life in the possiblility of losing his wife. Triumphant ending makes the read all worthwhile for me.

I was immediately caught in this book. It captures your attention quickly, and has good messages along with it. The characters were great, and very like how I view the south. I loved the interaction between his students and himself. Plus, his heartache brought together a great story. Looking forward to "Maggie", the sequel of this novel.

This book is Charles Martin's first, not as good as the later several. I've loved his most recent books "When Crickets Cry", "Wrapped in Rain" and "Chasing Fireflies". A Christian author whose writing style is excellent.
Martin is a great author - Great characters and great story of loss and redemption.
A tale of loss, as we watch one man work through the pain of losing his wife in childbirth. The setting of a sleepy Southern town, with his lifelong friends and his connections with other more recent arrivals, helps us see how a community can reach out in love and caring in difficult times.
good book
delightful story. I'll be looking for more by this author.
Excellent!!! Can't lay it down.
I liked this book but I was confused about the ending. I will probably read the next book.
