Interesting read, a little too much voodoo for me. Also started out to be a sexy read but never followed through. Enjoyable but not a keeper for me. Would read the author again tho.

It's a bit fluffy... not too fluffy. It's a bit serious... but not too serious. It's a bit creepy, but not too creepy.
If you get this book thinking it'll be a Serious Work, then you'll be disappointed.

But if you tend to like light-hearted books, "paranormals" or "cozies," you're going to be delighted, because this is a great
example of the genre and very well written.

The story line is fascinating and not too simple and not too complex. There are hints that will clearly be built on in future
books. The characters are charming, and not more than a touch clichéd. Yes, there's a gay best friend... but unlike the gay
best friends in every other series, he's believable, with a real personality, not a cardboard cutout stand-in who says
"Girlfriend" a lot.

This is one you can sink your teeth into, without grimacing every time the author makes a sophomoric writing mistake.
Because, frankly, she *doesn't make* those sophomoric mistakes that plague these types of series.

There is a romantic side-plot, but the main story is a mystery. I think both Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance readers
will enjoy it. Highly recommend as a lighter paranormal.

I really enjoyed this fun paranormal read!

When Nicki Styx has a near-death experience after suffering from heretofore unknown heart problems, she's sent back with the message "do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

That sounded great, and the doctor who saved her life in the ER looks pretty dang good, too. But soon Nicki finds out just exactly what that whole "Golden Rule" stuff was about. The spirits of people recently departed, who have unfinished business on Earth, seem drawn to Nicki. And they all want her to solve their problems.

Some of these ghosts/spirits are friendly, some are funny, and some, like the spirit of Caprice Dumaine, seem downright evil. It seems Caprice was involved in some truly witchy voodoo, and now it's up to Nicki, along with Caprice's Granny Julep, to set things right.

This was a fast, breezy read that has some laugh-out-loud moments, along with some truly creepy ones. Although the issues with Dr. Joe, Nicki's savior/boyfriend at first seemed a little too far out there (even more than seeing dead people!!), I was interested in this side plot by the end of the book.

I can't wait for the next book in the series!

I really liked this book. It was a fast and easy read, with some really funny moments. I love Nicki's attitude. All of the characters are well written and have depth to them. Nicki's friend Evan cracks me up, too. I love the premise of their shop, and the descriptions of vintage clothing and jewelry scattered througout the book.
I'm looking forward to reading more about Nicki and her hot doc boyfriend, Joe, too :)

Nicki has a near death experience with an ominous voice telling her to "DO unto others"

Shortly thereafter, ghosts of the dearly departed start seeking her out for help going into their light. The sexy doctor that saved her quickly becomes her love intrest, while her friend Caprice is brutally murdered. Caprice returns in a terrifying way. For Nicki, the dead girls are easy, but its the living that are difficult.

5 star rating, I really enjoyed this and look forward to the others in the series.

Very quick, easy read. Grabs you in from the start! Will look for others from this author. Reminds me a little of Wendy Roberts series since both characters see dead people.

This story was a lot like the TV show The Ghost Whisper. It had it's moments and the characters were okay. Nothing that would have me hunt down other books in the series. Of which I have read the two that are out now. It was fun to read and I would tell a friend to read it but not with high hopes of a great novel but something that is fun and easy to read. Near death experiences and a plot you can pretty much map out yourself. I know this seems kind of harsh but it is true. The author had talent in the use of drawing a great picture but it is a picture I have already seen as in the TV show and the comic book series. But I bet given another genre she would bloom.

Just finished this book for the second time, and it stood up very well. There's a light-hearted feel to the story, even though it's dealing with some serious issues. The female protagonist isn't a bitch, though she can get bitchy at times. She's really trying to do the right thing while dealing with some craziness in her life. There is a romantic side-plot, but the main story is a mystery. I think both Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance readers will enjoy it. Highly recommend as a lighter paranormal.

Nicki Styx died on the operating table and came back to life with a little something from beyond. She sees dead people. Talk about creepy! Nicki is trying to have a relationship with the doctor who brought her back but dead people keep interferring. She is continuously asked to help some ghost do something. One particular case involves voodoo which totally freaks her and Dr. Joe Bascombe out. This is a murder mystery that has a huge dose of humor for the heroine, her gay roommate and the doctor. Very funny, slap stick kind of humor. I read this in less than 3 hours. Very quick and easy to read.

Very enjoyable book, and a great start to a new series. The characters are well developed and there is a lot of room to grow for all of them. I liked Nicki from the start and found her attitude and personality refreshing. After coming back from a NDE she is thrown into quite a few situations that most people would run and hide from and handles them quite well given the situation. Joe is a great contrast and compliment to Nicki. The author developed there relationship well and the chemistry is undeniable ~ even with the twist that was throw in. But I must say that I loved Evan, laughed outloud at the conversations between him and Nicki and wished I could find a guy like him to be my friend. Looking forward to reading this series and seeing how the characters develop.

Good book. Not great but good. It was funny quick read that made me laugh. For the most part I like most of the characters. Looks like a good start to a series and I plan on reading the next one.

I did not love this book, but I'm willing to see if the series gets stronger as it goes. The author can be long winded and at times overly descriptive, which can take away from the flow of the story. It was a nice, easy read but at times uninteresting.

Nicki Styx is a girl that just wants to have fun, run her vintage clothing buisness and be left alone.
She has a heart attack and dies, and finds out life is much much more..
She is sent back, and now she sees the dead, and helps them along the way. Everything is going ok, weird but ok, until her friend Caprice is murdered.
Caprice, comes to Nicki and demands justice. Nicki senses all is not as it should be.
With the help of her business partner, and her former doctor they find out Caprice is a Voodoo witch and has a curse placed on her.
Nicki goes to the funeral, and meets Caprices grandmother.
The grandmother is going to help Nicki with the restless spirit, but everyone gets in over their head.
Very funny parts and some really good dialouge make this a very surprisingly good book.
Not my regular genre.. i really liked this.
The Voodoo rites are very well researched and this is a good book, going to get the second in the series.. a match made in hell..

Young woman dies, comes back to life, can see dead people. The premise has been done before, but this was an enjoyable novel and a counterbalance to the heavy reading I had just done. I should note there were fewer encounters with the dead and more discussion of voodoo than I would have expected. This was clearly a start to a series. Quick read, can be done in one evening. It won't linger in your mind, but it will entertain you while you have the book open.

This book was soooo good. A 29 year old who has a "Near Death Experience", a gay best friend and Voodoo. What's not to like. I could not put this book down. I laughed, got scared and had a great time. Besides if I hooked up with a hunky doctor my mom would be so proud. LOL

These characters are fabulous and easy to love. Interesting premise for this series. Can't imagine how frightening it would be to see and speak to the dead. Finding out there is a light to follow at the end of life adds great appeal.

from the back cover: There's something about almost dying that makes a girl rethink her priorities. Take Nicki Styx - she was strictly Goth and vintage, until a brush with the afterlife leaves her with the ability to see dead people. Before you can say boo, Atlanta's ghosts are knocking at Nicki's door. But things get even more complicated when a friend foolishly sells her soul to the devil, and Nicki's new gift lands her in some deep voodoo.
